Help me pick my new (last rifle)
I have decided to get a new rifle. In fact, I have decided to sell off a few of the rifles I currently have and purchase one rifle that I can devote some money and a lot of range time to get good with--instead of having several rifles I really can't shoot and don't use much. As such, this rifle needs to fulfill a couple of roles that are usually better left to more than one rifle. These are things I want my new rifle to be able to do:
1. Highly accurate, medium to long range target shooting--between 400-800yards
2. South Dakota prairie dog hunting. Shots usually between 200-500 yards max but sometimes a little further. When we go, we usually put out a lot of rounds and frequently have to hike around a little.
3. Look cool. I know this is silly from a grown man, but I love the look of a tactical rifle and have always wanted one....
4. I want a caliber that offers me the option of occasionally being used on larger deer sized game
After lots of research and much soul searching, I have narrowed down my next purchase to the following rifles...please help me pick
Remington PSS in .308
Remington PSS TLR in 308
Savage 10fpLE in 308
Savage 110FP in 25-06

I know I'm not staying within your specs but I had that quandry a few years ago and ended up with a Wby MkV, rebarreled to a 28", heavy taper, minimum tolerance 257 Wby Mag. It'll do everything you're talking about. 0 -

I wouldn't choose either 308 or the 25/06 for prairie dog shooting, but it sounds like your mind is made up so I would go with one of the Remington rifles you mentioned. 0 -

I would hate to see anybody buy their "last rifle". But, if thats what your down to, I would go with the 25-06. Its a more accurate round and plenty of different grain bullets to cover your needs. 0 -
Want to sell me any of the rifles you don't want anymore? 0 -
I would, if I were already planning to spend a few Ducets on this thing, go for either and Ed Brown custom, or Dakota Action rifle that you can determine the phsical characteristics of myself. Brown will do about anything (cosmetically or mechanically) that you desire, and Dakota is the same deal. As far as cartridge goes, overall versatility would fall to the 6mm cartridges in my opinion. I really like the 6mm PPC and its' reputation for accuracy preceeds it. It would certainly do the job on PD's and could also be worked up to be a decent mid-size deer cartridge. Most 22 caliber rounds are just too light to get the job done in my book, so 243 or perhaps 257 bullets are going to be the best compromise. If you stick to a factory gun...go with the new adjustable trigger Savage and then you'll have money left over to play with to a degree for optics and such.

I am into Roberts Improved, but am a handloader. Will do everything the 25-06 does, for less money. GW. 0
