Ammo for 1 in 8 AR-15
I have been shooting 55gr moly coated rounds in my match Rock River Arms AR-15 and have been very happy with the results. I mostly shoot at 100 and 200 yard ranges. I have been told that shooting heavier bullets will result in better accuracey for a barrel with a 1/8 twist. At 600 yards I can see that might be true, but at the reletively short ranges I shoot should it make that big a difference? TIA....Joe

Joe... At the ranges you are shooting, heavier bullets will not necessarily produce better groups. The faster twist barrels help to stabilize heavier bullets, but also work well with the 55 gr bullets.
I would not shoot bullets lighter than 55 gr in the 1-8 twist barrel as the high rotation can sometimes cause very light bullets to come apart in flight.

Pick up, or home load some match rounds and see what the results are. Rifles have loads that they perform better with, and if what you have is a match rifle then it is supposed to be designed around use of match loads for optimum performance.

General rule of thumb...the tighter the twist, the heavier the bullet that can be stabilized by the rifling. A 1 in 8 should be able to stabilize the heaviest of 22 cal. bullets, up to say 72 grainers. Over-rotation, as previously stated, can cause lighter bullets to cavitate and even disintegrate as the RPM's can often exceed 172,000, not to mention the copper fouling such speeds can cause!
I would avoid anything under 55 grains, but feel they (55 grainers) should perform admirably with that twist. There is no absolute "rule" on this as some guns just like bullets that should not work in them; it's very hard to predict. Best approach, as mentioned earlier, is to try a few different factory or hand loads in conjunction with a range cleaning between test batches to determine which bullet weight your AR likes!
