is it legal to own?
My dad is leaving me a rifle. is a saiga rifle. looks like a hunting rifle but has a small magazine that comes off.Its a semi auto holds 5 rounds in the magazine. He bought it a long time ago I think back in 99. . I dont know a lot about the gun laws in California so I want to know if its legal. I went with him to purchase it and he gave me the receipt for it.

The rifle itself is legal under California law and as long as you are at least 18 years of age, it is perfectly legal for your Dad to give you the rifle and for you to own it.0 -

erm you guys sure? I thought the '94 cali ban had the saiga listed by name and no saiga's were cali legal, I've never seen one for sale in a gunshop in cali either..
*shrug*
But I could be wrong..0 -
It depends upon what you mean by "leaving".
If you live in CA, & your Dad is a resident of another state, then the only way he can "leave" it to you is in his will. Otherwise, he must transfer it to a CA dealer, who in turn will transfer it to you.

Saiga is not listed by name. Unless the rifle has one of the California "evil features", it is legal.0 -
I dont think it has evil features.
It doesnt have a 30 round magazine, it has no flash supressor, no bayonet lug or bayonet for that matter, no pistol or thumb stock.
it basically looks like a regular hunting rifle stock but has a small 5 round mag.
Are there other evil features ( as you say ) that may be illegal?
EOD Guy thanx for all your help in advance

We bought it in 99. Well he did I was just there with him. The guy beside us was buying a AK-47 look alike. the clerk told us these are the last modles you can purchase. Something to do with the year 2000 ( not sure what though) Either way it was purchased in california in 99 so either the ban didnt apply to this model or the shop sold it illegally which I doubt.
Theire selling SKS rifles for 219$ heres their ad

I thought SKS's were illegal in california but if theire illegal why are they being sold0 -
The only SKS's that are illegal in California are those that have been modified to accept detachable magazines or that have an attached grenade launchers, i.e., Yugos. 0
