1873 Springfield Trapdoor - MODEI ?

I have a trapdoor that is clearly marked "MODEI 1873." Note the spelling, it is not marked "MODEL." My question is reguarding the spelling? Why is 'MODEL' spelled 'MODEI'? Does this mean that the rifle is a fake/repro?

The rifle seems original to my untrained eye in all other aspects.

Any feedback would be helpfull

  I know the obvious answer would be that the "L" was only lightly struck, but this mark seems to be a clear "I" and not a lightly struck/worn "L". I have never seen this before.
