Old black powder pistol dbl. barrel

I came across an old double barrel black powder pistol.
The only name I see on it is ROSCO then the #39.
It is a 44 cal. with 4" double octogon barrels.
Anyone ever heard of it or have any info. ?????

    Make VERY sure the gun predates 1899. I mean positive proof of such that can easily be documented. Then discreetly consult your local, state, and federal regulations about the legality of having ammunition in your possession that might be used in the weapon and the legality of the piece itself.

    Otherwise you may be holding a ticket for an unplanned vacation at a federal facility of their choice and a large fine to boot. Such items require that you be discreet and that all laws are complied with before you decide to put the gun on public display... Which you just did by posting your question.

    Should you find the gun to be illegal (and I believe it probably is), then you'll have to accept the fact that it cannot be made legal here in the US under most circumstances. That's the time to either wrap it in oilcloth and put it back in g-pa's old steamer trunk or destroy the piece. I'd opt for the former if it's a family heirloom, but it's your choice.

    State laws will have much bearing as to what happens if the piece passes federal muster. Assuming rifled bores and a serial number, there's at least a glimmer of hope. Sometime a C&R status can be applied to the weapon, but it's by no means a sure thing.

    BE VERY CAREFUL. ASK DISCREET QUESTIONS. MAKE SURE THAT THE PIECE IS SAFELY STORED AND OUT OF REACH BY ANYONE.

    Trooper is right, without a picture we are all in the dark. juddroy is this a cartridge shooting pistol or a muzzle loader? Nord please explain to us what about juddroy's piece makes you think it is illegal (other than in such places as NYC).

    Don't see how it could be illegal if its a muzzle loading pistole, thats not even considered a firearm in most states.

    I would ask where anyone would have gotten muzzle loader? The post stated "double barrel black powder".

    Agreed... If it's a muzzlestuffer, it's not a weapon unless loaded.

    If a breech loader, then it can become a real problem in a hurry and I'd error on the side of caution rather than take a chance.

    i have same problem. i have dbl. barrel percussion cap muzzle loader pistol i haven't been able to identify. a local gun shop guessed it was early 18th century french make. only marks found is small stamp (EA) on side. has 4 notches on barrels (2 on each). story is my great grandfather found on beach in pacific isle area.

    If a muzzlestuffer and unloaded... Then not a firearm in most locations. Check yours to be sure.

    If pre-1899 and you can prove it... Then an antique, but be careful of those antiques which take modern ammo.

    If pre-1899 and a muzzlestuffer... Then an antique, but you need to refer to my first comment.

    Simply check your local laws. Ask an honest dealer or a collector in your area. Some will refer you to the police, but I don't happen to believe they're always the best source of reliable information.

    Until I see a Photo or two or a discrption of the Proof Marks...I'd venture to say it sounds like a Belguim/English or French Double Barrel Pocket Pistol...Late 1820's thru 1850's...all had Screw Barrels and No Ram Rod...In Good Condition and depending upon the Maker and Condition is Worth $250.00 and up........thats if its an OLD Original Pistol......If its a Modern Made Reproduction Piece...then its only gonna be Worth $25.00 TO $50.00....THIS IS ALL SPECULATION.......Lets get some Photos Posted......
