Nice pistol for wife
I want my wife to start shooting at the local range with me. What would be a nice small pistol for here to learn and practice with? She has no prior shooting experience.Thanks in advance.

Does your range offer pistols to rent? Try out a variety there if they rent see what she likes.

If the gun is going to be for practice you might look into a Walther P22. Its .22 cal. of course which means its cheap to shoot, so really she can shoot as much as she wants to. It has great ergonomics and is comfortable to hold and fire. It comes in a few differnt varients: 5" target barrel or 3.5 some come with both, slide finish and frame color. I think you and her both would enjoy this gun. Check it out

Recently I got a Browning BDA in .380 auto for my wife. I'm going to miss her.
Seriously, she loves the pistol. Since it's satin nickel she even thinks it's pretty....
I took her to a range and rented a couple of pistols so she could try them out to see what she liked. That worked out well.

You are going to get many different opinions on this,the answer is whatever she is comfortable with. Borrow handguns from friends or go to a range that rents guns so she may try several different types.
My suggestion would be .22 caliber which has low noise, low recoil and is cheap to shoot.
I would also suggest a revolver because it's a simple mechanism, you can tell at a glance if it's loaded or cocked. I usually start people out with a S&W J or K size revolver depending upon the size of the persons hand.
A word of warning. Women are naturally better shooters than men. It's sad but true. I've taken several women to the range for their first time to shoot a gun and they really suprised me with their accuracy. Proper gun handling does not seem to be a natural thing however.

Take her to a gun store, and put everything you can in her hand. See what is "comfortable" to her. A good starting caliber is a 22, of course, doesn't scare them off right away. Wait until she is ready to move up to a larger caliber.
After a LOT of looking, my wife found the Walther P-99 to "fit" her well. It has 3 different parts to make the handle (grip) a different size, for different folks. The smallest one was the one that fit my wife. Then again if you want a revolver, there is a reason the pistol is called a Lady Smith. [;)]

I agree that you should take her ot a range that has rentals so she has a idea of what she likes. The women i have taught took to a 3 in 38 or a 9mm, depending on if it is going ot be a personal defense weapon or a range gun. The revolver would be a good start and has she gorws in interest you could move her into a semi auto, you might look at a 32 or a 38 to start in a wheel gun and then move into a 380 or 9mm in semi auto. 0 -

If they rent, as someone pointed out, let her try out various calibers and see what she likes.
A few lady friends of mine went to the range and wound up settling for a .357 magnum (after dismissing the .22 as "too little")!0
