M16 feeding problems?????

I have an m16 that is about 2 years old.It has been a good rifle to me but im starting to have some problems.On auto it will empty a 40rd mag holding down on the trigger easily.But if i try to pop off small bursts then the bolt will ride over the casing,causing it to jam the bullet sideways.It only does this in short bursts.The casing is scared up pretty bad afterwards.Dont know much about the gun in general.any suggestions?????????????//forgive me im new at forums!!thanks!!!

    Is this a selective fire lower? i.e. full/burst/semi? Or is it only full auto?

    no,it only jams on full auto when i try short bursts.otherwise it is fine

    I'm wondering if when you let up off of the trigger if something isn't hanging up causing unneeded friction causing the bolt to not come back all the way.

    the bolt comes back all the way but its like the bullet is hanging on the grooves where the bolt face locks in. i was wondering if they could the be polished.

    Odd....normally they are more likely to do that with longer bursts than short ones....perhaps somebody else here might have the answer...I'm stumped. Sorry.

    I'm wondering if the "40 rd mag" part isn't the clue we need.

    USGI milspec mags are only made in 20 & 30 rd versions. Obviously, you aren't using one of these. The fact that you have this problem with many different mags doesn't mean anything if all of them are junk. Try using a USGI mag & let us know if that makes any difference.

    Oh, & always load an M16 mag with at least 2 rds less than its capacity.

    I would ckeck my ammo carefully or completely change ammo and see what happens. Neal made a good suggestion. Mag tension will cause problems. Look at your feed lips on the mags. case shoulder lengths may be off on your ammo . This gun ran fine as stated before so it is something simple or a replacement part needed.

    Welcome Snipeu2005, if this problem doesn't happen when you are on semi, Then I suggest opening the bolt, removing the mag and spend as much time as your nerves will allow, looking for small movements that are out of the ordinary as you select different fire positions. It might be that your select fire switch could be giving you some greef.

    Also you might want to cycle the bolt slowly in both firing positions and see if there are any noticeable differences.HOPE THIS INFO HELPS!!!
