M60 Top Cover Question

I have a JRW Semi M60 in standard configuration. I hear that a lot of people put M60E3 top covers on their standard M60s. Why is this? The only advantage I can think of is that you would be able to put the top cover down with the bolt forward. Is this the only reason, or is there something else I am missing. If I do put an M60E3 top cover on it, do I have to replace anything else to make it fit? Thanks!

    that's the way I understand it too... it would be MUCH simpler to be able to close the cover with the bolt forward, IMO, but I won't be changing mine over for that...

    hi,
    just came across your post and thought I would chime in. The REAL benefit of the mk 43 feed cover is that it allows you to charge the weapon with the top cover down, so you can jam feed the round or load them onto the tray with the bolt forward then charge the weapon just prior to firing. This added step is a nice feature on a weapon that fires from the open bolt position. You can keep the weapon loaded without keeping your drive spring compressed.

    Steeltoe I have kinda thought about doing the same thing to mine but the cost isnt worth it to me. I have seen some feed tabs for sale but just havent ordered any yet, here is one link http://www.robertrtg.com/m60.html. I think this would help loading without haveing 3 hands and an act of god. I would like to get the "D" kit for mine someday though.
