SKS question
I don't know anything about an SKS.
How do you convert a fixed mag to a detachable 30rd mag or don't you?
I'm thinking about buying an SKS to keep in the trunk of my car because they are so cheap and I already have a couple thousand rounds of 7.62x39 ammo.

I'm going to buy an SKS for my Christmas present to myself.
I have a choice of an older Norinco with matching numbers or a new Yugo SKS. They each cost the same, $139. I imagine I can put a bayonet on the Norinco, but not the Yugo. This rifle will be for behind my truck seat.
Please give me the Pros and Cons on the Norinco and the Yugo.

i would think that it would be legall to own where ever in the us. it would be considered an assult weapon if it had a hi-cap mag or full auto, or folding stock, ect. but i think that since most sks's dont have mags that hold more than 10 rounds you could "hunt" with it. new york state considrs my 22 rifle an assult rifle but in reality its just a take-down survival rifle.

my first guess would be to contact my local sherriff's office or gun shop in case there are local laws prohibiting them. as far as i know,it should not be a problem.

There are no county firearms restrictions in IL, but several cities do have them. So, we need to know your city.
Chicago has a list of "assault weapons" that is different from the federal list of "semi automatic assault weapons"; they prohibit the SKS only if it has a detachable magazine.

I live in Des Plaines NW suburb of Chicago.
I found a nice 1950 stamped russian model it has the rework stamp on it so it was refurbished at one point in time the seller is selling it for $150 its in execelent shape looks like wood dates back to the 50's it has a blued bolt and barrel and still has the straight bayonette. I would love to get it but I want to make sure its 100% legal for me to own. I would only fire it a few times at a range to see how it performs , I want it more for its historical value.0 -
what you are looking at is a 1950 Russian Sks. is it original with a 10rd fixed box mag? and in the factory stock? and is the Gun shop in the same county where you reside? If the answers are all yes, i would say this is not a assault weapon, and i dont think the LIC. dealer could sell it to someone in that county if it was on a local ban list !!! but to protect yourself, like the others have said, check with the LOCAL Authorities, just to be SURE!!!! If an individual is selling it, do the authorities check and see if you are legal and find out from them, if the firearm need to be transfered legally!!!By all means, COVER THY 'A' 0 -
yes I am a firm beliver of the cover thy "A" theory....it is from a private collecter. I'm going to call the local authorities to verify . Its just that that is touchy situation so I thought I would start here and get all of your input,,you all have been very helpful.
is 150 a good price ?
yes it has the standard 10 rd clic non detachable ( at least I dont know how it comes off I am not in possesion of it. Im going from memory. but its a little clip it may even be smaller than 10 not to sure0 -

I would give the guys at Maxon a call. I would have, in years past, sent you to Bill Klicka @ Village Sport but they are under new ownership and are additioanlly NOT the people I figure could answere this kind of question cogently! The thing about the "no county laws" is at least fairly true, but in the Cook county area I would ALWAYS seek professional help in determining the intricacies of that commie midget Dalys' latest temper tantrum (I SWEAR the guy is Rainman in disguise! from what it sounds like it is a good deal. I will have to contact the owner to see if all sn are matching. The more I hear about it the more I want this thing. That would suck to find out its not legal what a teaser. But hey its not worth it if it is not legal. I'm praying for the ideal answer. I will call maxxons from Istanbul or something lol to verify the legalities

Don't worry about matching numbers; it's a REBUILD. Many have renumbered mags, or even stocks. It doesn't matter; that's still a good price for a Russkie SKS.
