winchester .22 identification

Hi, could someone out there please tell me any thing about this rifle? can,t find a serial number on it, but other than the usual winchester branding it has model 02A .22 short long and long rifle on it. very small narrow fore end. trigger guard with a long scroll. and a cresent butt plate. thank you very much.     its the improved model 1900 bolt action single shot rifle. it should have a metal grip that acts as part of the trigger guard. made from 1902 to 1923. nice little guns.

    None of the early Winchester single shots were serial #rd, so you have to just estimate their age by the patent dates and improvements. The model 1902 was last changed in 1926-27 to chamber long rifle cartridges. The early 1902s were chambered for .22 short, long and extra longs. Winchester also changed the rifleing and added a couple of thousandths to the bore. This modification was called the 02A. I don't think the crescent butt plate was ever offered on the 02-02As. So I would guess your rifle was re stocked with a 1904 stock. The later 1904s were changed to 1904As and had composition buttplates like the 1902s.

    Hello Dick...

    Your Winchester Model 02 was made sometime after 1917/1918. When this Model was first introduced, it was referred to and marked as the "Model 1902". During the year 1918, Winchester dropped the "19" (and for their older Models, the "18") off the name on all of their various Models in production at that time. The Model 1902/02 was never serialized.
