260 Rem

I've been thinking about getting a 260rem, most of them I see have a 22" barrel, I like the 24" barrel to get the most FPS and less muzzel blast, I know this is more of an issue on some calibers than on others. So how does the 260 work with a 22" vs a 24" can it use a 24" to its advantage, or is it about maxed out at 22"

    I had a .243 H&R rebarreled to .260 and went with a 24" pipe. I have not chronoed it, but it should get about 100fps over the 22" barrel and it groups nicely. It will not be as hot a cartridge as the .308 or .243 but with the long .264 bullets that should not be a big issue. Unfortunately the .260 has not caught on as it deserves to in these days of bigger is better and magnum is king.

    An old rule of thumb is - 25 to 30 fps per inch of barrel, loss or gain from a 24" tube.

    Kdub, tests by Jon Sundra with several calibers and barrels actually shortened 1" at a time, indicated an average of 50fps in actual use. That is what I based my estimate of 100 fps upon.

    Depends on the expansion ratio. Smaller expansion ratio, larger increse in velocity. A 260 Remington will gain more velocity per barrel inch than a 458 Winchester will. Of course this is all based on a standard length barrel for each caliber and then either going up or down in length. With the larger caliber you will lose less FPS per inch in shortening the barrel and with the smaller caliber you will gain more FPS per inch as the barrel is lengthened. Eventually you will reach the point of diminishing returns as you go longer in any caliber.
