    Hello swiftswede: The Md 1897/97 Brush guns came with a 26 in barrel. They had a shorter stock, with more drop. Standard was 13-3/4 LOP with 1&5/6s drop. So you will have to look close at the stock. The Solid frame gun had a shorter magazine tube as well, (held only 4 shells. Brush guns were available from 1897-1931. After 1931, it was just a 97 with a short barrel. All stocks were the same. Hope this helps you. Regards Dave

    Hello Steve...

    One other identifying feature of a true Brush Gun, is that they were all CYL bore choked. If you have a Model 1897/97 with a 26-inch barrel and it has any other choke, it is a special order Field grade gun instead of being a Brush Gun.

    Hi Bert,
    Did you make the Little Johns Auction this week? I was not able to go to this one, but I heard that there were some great deals. I am sure that you alreday know but there are a ton of '85's in the upcoming Rock Island auction, most of them were from the Murray Collection. Some really nice things there!!!!

    Hello Steve,

    Yes, I was at the auction both last night, and Monday night. There were several decent Winchesters in the auction, but nothing went cheap[:(]. Almost everything went for top $$$ estimate (or higher). On the bright side, I didn't spend any money on another Winchester that I don't have room in either of my gun safes for[:D]

    p.s. Yes, I have my Rock Island Auction catalog... but I try not to look at it very often.

    Well Bert... It is scary to open the Rock Island Auction catalog, but I just cannot refrain myself, I have my eye on that serial number 7 Volcanic, and lot numbers 1002 and 3511, We'll just have to hope noone else does. There must be one heck of a rivalry between these guys and john, he certainly does not speak highly of them, do you have any idea why?

    Yes I do, but this is not really the place to discuss it. Suffice it to say, I would much rather buy a firearm in one of Little John's auctions than I would from Rock Island Auction... and it has nothing to do with the fact that I know John very well on a personal level.
