    Roy,
According to Blue Book 24th Edition, All post 1964 Model 70's began with the serial #700,000. 1964 serialization ended with 740599, 1965 serialization ended with 809177. Yours was manufactured sometime in 1965. Guys please correct me if I'm wrong.

Welcome to the forum threescrew! I concur with lumberjack, that 1965 is the year of manufacture. The Blue book info is right out of Maddis' book, (which does have a few errors in it) Regards Dave

    Good morning Dave...

A few[?][?][?] Me thinks you are being too kind in your assessment... it is more accurate to say that the vast majority of his serial number to DOM cross reference list is inaccurate[:(]. Specifically, the "Start of year" serial number for nearly every year (after the year of introduction) is incorrect for the Models 1885, 1886, 1887, 1890, 1892, 1893, 1894, 1894, 1895, and the list goes on! I can not really say how accurate he is for the Models 1866, 1873, and 1876, as I have not researched very many of them... but I would be highly suspicious of those as well. I focus my gun collecting and research on the John M. Browning designed Winchester firearms[^]

Good morning Bert! Like I said, the Blue Book took the serial numbers, from Maddis' book, (even you have said that) and the "First Edition" is full of errors. In this particular post, the Winchester mentioned was a mid-60s gun, and most of Maddis' info from the mid 50's, on is pretty close, in most cases. Winchesters' record keeping wasn't all that accurate from about 1890 to 1960, depending on the model.

As far as your "focus" on Browning designed Winchesters, well that's nice, and your focus is largely rifles too! [:D] Then every Winchester collection should have a couple of the bread and butter Winchesters guns, if your a rifle person, a couple of Winchester shotguns too, or vice/versa!. Regards Dave
