mauser 98 action

hi i was wondering if someone could tell me how accurate the mauser 98 action is. i was thinking about buying a rifle off here and it is a mauser 98 in 270. are they accurate? are they tough? i dont reallyknow that much about them so any information would be a great help. thanks

    The Mauser 98 is the most rugged, reliable, and the best bolt action ever made.
    Whether this particular rifle is accurate depends on who made it and what kind of condition it is in.

    Keep in mind that a large number of these conversions have been done over the years, and the key to any good rifle is the barrel. Find out what kind of barrel (Brand) was used and this should tell you at least a little bit anout what you can expect from this gun.

    Yes, all of the above is true. Mauser actions are incredibly strong and can be incredibly accurate. It depends on what is stated above and if the gunsmith who made the action took the time to do the job right!

    Shotgun News was running a continuing article for several months about a well known gunsmith (Coffield I think) who was rebuilding a Yugo Mauser rifle action. I would want to know before I purchased what kind of Mauser action this is and where it came from.

    For example, is it a renovated military action or a relatively new manufactured item specifically made to hook up to a sporting barrel. If it is a military renovation, I would ask the seller a number of questions about who did the work and how much and what kind of work was performed on the action. For example, was the reciever checked for squarness, was it checked for twisting, was it bent, was the top of the reciever level? Next, were the raceways lapped, was the bolt face lapped, was the barrel squared to the reciever, what is the headspacing in the barrel, is it a stock or lightened trigger?

    These are a few of the items I would want to know before I purchased.
