Guns With Military Numbers?

I was woundering what the numbers on the buttstock mean that you see on M16s And AK-47's and other Military Weapons?

for inventory and issue. sometimes refered to as field numbers or rack numbers. a fast way to inventory say....500 M-16's twice a week.

Plus, some foreign military will stamp the last 4 digits of a rifle's serial # on the stock (& maybe engrave it on the bolt) to keep the "correct" parts together.

As noted above the numbers can mean many different things, it just depends on who stamped them there.
