What is the difference between a Winchester Model 97 solid-frame barrel and a Winchester model 97 take-down barrel?

  The barrel shank (the part that screws into the frame) has a completely different type of threads. The Takedown barrel has what is referred to as "interupted threads" and they are not spiral cut. The solid frame barrel has threads like a standard machine screw, and they have a much finer T.P.I. than the Takedown threads.

  Turnsignal: (sorry Bert) But the take down barrel, (barrel only) does have one continuous thread just, like the non-takedown. However they are of different diameters, I believe. The take down barrel is machined for the receiver extention, which screws on first, and bottoms out on a timeing mark. Then the adjusting sleeve screws on, (it has the interupted threads) and is held in place buy the adjusting sleeve lock and screw. The advantage to the take-down version, as wear occurs, you can loosen the adjusting sleeve screw and lock and rotate the adjusting sleeve one notch at a time to remove the play. The solid frame 1897 didn't have this feature.
  The take-down 97 has a barrel chamber ring for the barrel assy. it fits flush against it, where the non-take-down doesn't. The breech bolts are slighty different also. (Non take-down barrels screw directly into the receiver, until the timing marks meet). Without the timing marks you could over torque the barrel assemblies and possibly strip the threads.
