Colt AR-15 M4 question
I just purchased a used Colt AR-15 M4 with removable carry handle and I would like to know if there is a way to tell if the upper is a Colt or not? The reason I ask is the color of the upper doesn't match the lower and there are no Colt markings on the upper that I can see. The barrel on the upper is marked CMP and 5.56 NATO 1/7.[?]

The M4 version was not being manufactured when Colt discontinued the AR-15. Are you sure that it is an AR-15? Does it SAY AR-15 on the gun?

No, it says match target M4 carbine. 0 -
Maybe the M4 upper is from a Colt LE model???

You don't have a Colt AR-15; you have a Colt Match Target. Not just a matter of quibbling over words.
The barrel sounds like a Colt. I don't know of any specific marking to look for on the upper receiver; if you want to post some digital photos, maybe we can tell for sure. It's possible that the entire top end was assembled from parts, but more than likely it is a complete Colt M4 upper that someone put on a Match Target lower.
Several years ago a few distributors sold NIB Colt M4 uppers with various barrel lengths. It could be one of these. In any case, the mismatched finish indicates that the upper definitely did not come from Colt with the lower.

Only Colt makes the "real" M4, there will be a small M4 stamped just above were the gas tube exits the upper, and the feed ramps in the barrel are also cut into the upper receiver. There will be marking as to who forged the upper, there are a few companies that do forgings for Colt. Go to www.biggerhammer.net to identify the marking.

My rifle has the m4 above the gas tube and according to the biggerhammer website it was forged by Olympic arms. I tried to add a photo, but it's not working. Thanks for all the info.0
