HART Barrel question.

How good is a Hart barrel, is it better than a factory stainless Sako TRG-S barrel?

Does it increase the value and would shortning a 30" barrel to a 26" or 28" barrel make a big difference in the accuracy?

I am looking at trading a new TRG-s for a used one with the hart barrel and factory blued barrel. Wondering if it is a good trade or not. Thanks, for any help.

    Hart Barrels are one of the top manufacturers of stainless steel Match barrels. There is a sizable group of excellent barrel makers today and Hart is one of these.

    Is it better than a Sako Factory barrel? I would say yes, although with an addendum that Sako barrels have been proven to be some of the better factory barrels. Lots of folks ask if a factory barrel should be changed out right away with a custom and I still think that it's better to shoot the factory barrel first to see how it performs. Sometimes you get lucky and the factory barrel works O.K. for what you require.

    Generally speaking, the addition of a top name barrel increases the value of a firearm, if that name means something to the buyer. It can mean even more if that barrel was put on with all of the accuracy enhancements that should be done when re-barreling for the first time. Unfortunately, the term "blueprinting" has been so overused and abused by people that don't know the first thing about what really goes into it, that most buyers just expect it or take it for granted. It doesn't usually increase the price these days.

    Cutting a barrel back can go either way as far as accuracy is concerned. It can improve or it can get worse. It can also remain neutral. There are way too many factors that affect accuracy to try and pin it on one factor only. It is the system as well as the shooter and his/her loads. However, if you do have it cut back, make sure that the new crown is cut perfectly perpendicular to the bore. I shoot a lot of 30" barrels so the length doesn't bother me.

    The trade is up to you. Look at the number of shots on the barrel already. What cartridge is it chambered for? Get a look at the throat if possible. If you can't examine the rifle ahead of time, get a three (3) day examination period. This deal wouldn't interest me. I'd shoot the new one and re-barrel if necessary.

    I agree. Unless you are not satisfied with the performance of your rifle (and your sure that it is rifle and not shooter induced) then I really don't see a need to trade. In fact the deal, as you describe it, raises the question of why the other party is wanting to trade if what they have is so good? Based on the "knowns" this is not something that I would do.

    I'd shoot the other rifle and clean the barrel myself first. If the barrel does not foul much, and if the throat is still smooth (low round count) and it groups in the .3"s or .4"s or better, than I say trade. If the Hart tube is half way shot out,..then you will be setting it back sooner than later,..so keep that cost in mind. Generaly speaking, if the gunsmith was any good, that rig will outperform yours. One thing also with Sako actions,..I have found them to be very square and true right from the box,..so fitting a barrel correctly is somewhat less intensive than on a 700rem or 70win action.

    I keep my barrels as long as possible,..so take that for what it's worth. Longer barrels and slower powders allow high velocities at lower pressures,..which translates into barrel life.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. The point is mute because he sold it before we finalized the trade.[V] He was selling because the gun was too fast and powerful for deer (warbird shooting close to 3900 fps with 150 grain bullet). The hart barrel only had 60 rounds through it.

    I am looking foward to shooting mine (sako firebird NIB). It has the Gentry Custom muzzle break on it and a Sims Limbsaver recoil pad so it should see the deer get hit and not lose it on the recoil. Gentry break is called the quite break (increases only 1 decible on a 300 win mag) and he is top of the line. Check out the www.gentrycustom.com site for more info.

    Just wonder how he feels about guys dear hunting at 1800 meters with a 50 BMG[?][;)][}:)][:D] thats 768+ gr of bullet @ say 2500 fps? [?]
