Mauser ammo question
I had a friend call me last night wanting to know where he could get a good deal on 7.63 Mauser ammo. I don't think I have ever heard of it so I asked him several times if he is sure that is what he has.
What is this stuff?

Your friend is probably referring to the 7.63x25 mm Mauser. This is more commonly known in the US as the 30 Mauser.
The 30 Mauser was actually invented by an American named Hugo Borchardt and fired from one of the first semi-automatic pistols by the same name as its inventor. The Borchardt pistol was made in Germany by Ludwig, Loewe & Co. Both pistol and cartride were introduced in 1893. The cartridge was later adopted by Mauser for the Model 1896 pistol. It has been used mainly in the "Broomhandle" mauser pistols since. Until the 357 magnum was invented the 30 Mauser was highest velocity pistol cartridge in the world. They use about an 86 grain bullet with velocity in the 1200 to 1400 fps range.

MT357, I specifically do *NOT* advocate that your friend act on this information without confirming it by his own research (in other words, don't rely on my comments here), but according to my key reference on handgun rounds, the 7.63 Mauser (a.ka. .30 Mauser as heavyiron noted - and some other names) and 7.62 Tokarev are dimensionally identical and interchangeable. I have had both rounds in my own collection and they seem to be dimensionally equivalent, but that does not mean the loadings are!!!
