I had a pistol like this years ago and BATF assigned a NO. and we had a gun shop stamp it There are ways to bring out the orginal number . I would check with Batf but to be on the safe side and call from a non traceable to you phone. Most of these 1911's were defaced because they were war trophy bring backs not 100 % legal. some times it is not worth the chance as breaking any fire arm law is a FELONY The pistol I had was bought at auction so I made the seller keep until I got it cleared with BATF.

Are you sure that the SN was REMOVED? I had one some years ago, a Remington UMC that NEVER had a SN. THere are several stories about the UMC plant attributing them as "lunch box specials" or "gifts" to execs. My gun had all inspectors markings and it was apparrent that no numbner had ever beeen assigned.

we had a customer who inherited a 1911A1 from his deceased father. the father brought it back from the WWII pacific theater without uncle sams permission. he chiseled out the SER# on the gun...

our customer filled out and filed the correct BATF forms, was assigned a new number, and had it proffesionaly applied to the gun.

    just a random thought...
    best regards, mike.
