Llama 45

What's the difference between the Colt 45 1911 and the Llama version? Other than the price, that is. Do they stack up to the Colt in terms of reliability and accuracy and so on?

I know I sound like a kid in a candystore with no money but I'd really like to know.

    I've never had a Llama, and I don't know anyone who does, but their reputation isn't very good. Most people I've talked to consider them to be JUNK. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, get one of the basic Sprinfield Armory models. Springfields are usually accurate, reliable, and well worth the investment.

    From what a lot of folks say about a Lama, is that its like buy one and hope its a good one. I've read reviews of a few who have bought them and liked them. They said they were about as good as their more expensive 1911A1 models. Then there are the other reviews of folks who didn't particulary care for them..at all.. Need I say more. But they do feel pretty solid. A cousin of mine recently bought one, I haven't haf the chance to go fire it with him. Wish I had so I could tell you the results.

    Just to put a different spin on this topic, I happen to have a Llama 45 Government model that I have owned for 12 years (and I would not sell or trade it for any other .45 ACP). I have put over 10,000 rounds through it with nary a problem or jam, and it is extremely accurate... at 15 yards, I can hit a quarter 9 times out of ten. It was much tighter out of the box than any other .45 ACP that I have owned (but my other .45s are all Government model 1911s).

    I have heard and read bad things about Llama, but I have also read and heard good things about them. I may have gotten a peach out of the lemon basket, or other people may have picked a lemon out of the peach bowl.

    You can ride a Llama but the Colt will shoot.
    I would never sell a Llama-just too many variables in
    quality. I have owned and sold several-not to friends.

    So I guess I shouldn't take the risk of bad quality.

    Several years ago I had a small gun shop dealing mostly in collector Colts, Winchesters, etc. I knew several people who had Llamas, having bought them with the idea of getting a .45 without springing for the more expensive Colt- which was about the only non-custom .45 available at the time. Each and every example I saw and heard of was a trouble-prone piece of garbage; think of a problem a gun could exhibit and the Llama would show it. Fit and finish were also terrible. No one would take them in trade or buy a used one. From what I've heard they've improved somewhat, but why take a chance? Get a Springfield or preferably a Colt and have a gun that will be reliable and will actually have some value after the purchase.
