The original company was Carl Zeiss, Zeiss Optics is the newer Corporate version. Very high quality optics, a bit more reasonable than some of the high end optics.

There is Zeiss, whci is the one you are familiar with- and there is Carl Zeiss-Jena; It's the same founder, however, it's the production facilities located in what used to be East Germany; and has been operated separately since the end of the war. Now that Germany is back together, I don't know if the companies have been reunited. As for West German Zeiss, I have a binocular & 3 scopes, all of which are well worth whatever it was that I paid for them.

He Dog is partially right on the Zeiss being reasonable. The German Zeiss is just as high as the other high end German scopes (Swarovski, Schmidt & Bender) and maybe, maybe not as good a quality (a high end dealer told me they have more problems). I think it would be the Zeiss Diavari line in scopes.

The Zeiss USA has the Zeiss Conquest line which is german made lens, different coatings, 1" tubes (not the 30mm) ect. sent to the USA for assembly. The quality is very good and the price is comparable to the Leupold Vari-X 3 line. I think the Zeiss Conquest is the best buy for the money.

Either line is going to be very good. The German Zeiss will be slighty better, more durable and way more expensive.

Can't say enough good things about my Zeiss scopes in 30mm and my Zeiss binoculars. I started with a 1.5X6 and since then I have stayed exclusively with 30mm tubes. Of course, my Schmidt and Benders and Sarovskis are first rate also.
