Can nickle plating be removed and is it affordable?

  Question-where would I go to get small Colt parts nickle plated? Trying to save a 1877DA 38.

  It can easily be removed by the same process that deposited the plating on the item. Any shop that does plating can remove it, & it won't cost much.

  Brownell's sells a kit for about $40, enough to de-nickel quite a few guns. Consists of two chemicals you mix and put the parts in for a few hours. Can take overnight in some cases, depending on how heavy the plating and protected areas, etc. I have used it several times and it works good, leaving the surface a light gray color. Hope this helps.

  Nickel plating can be twitchy.
  
  Electroplating can be removed by the reverse of the basic plating process. This is not difficult or terribly expensive. It does not harm the basis metal. The only way I've seen this method used was layered with copper (first layer). There may be other methods, but I had no interest in decorative plating.
  
  But electroless nickel is very difficult to remove. You remove it by wearing it away -- think wire wheel or sand blasting. If the electroless nickel is a first-class job, you will fa-cock the basis metal pretty thoroughly. Probably, your best bet when working with a good job is to vapor hone surfaces then electroless nickel again.
  
  Your first question then is: What kind of nickel plating am I dealing with?

  Actually the Brownell's nickel-stripper works well on electroless nickel as well.

  If you leave a nickeled part in Hoppe's, it will removed the nickle.
