replacement barrel woes...
The replacement barrel for my Swede M96 does not fit my reciever. It looks as if the new barrel threads are squared off and need to have a die run over them . Do all replacement barrels have threads that need to be chased down or did I get a bad barrel from the supplier? My gunsmith does not have the die to finish the threads. TIA....Joe

Send it back and get a barrel from Brownells. They have been in the business for years. If they sell barrels specifically for the Swede 96, you can be assured thats what they'll fit.

Well, that was weird. The electricity in the whole house just shut off while I was typing an answer. Bright blue skies, no clouds, it's cool so no one is running their air conditioners. Maybe I should change the tone of my answer... nah.

A couple of points:
1) Real gunsmiths don't use dies to thread barrels. Only amateurs and the untrained try something as inaccurate and low quality as using a die. It is unprofessional.
2) Real gunsmiths use a lathe and a technique known as single pointing or single point threading to thread barrel tenons.
3) Real gunsmiths know how to pick up a thread to fix it or make it deeper. They don't use a die.
4) Mass producers of goods make mistakes and ship bad product sometimes. Send this barrel back and get a refund including shipping both ways. The product is defective and it isn't your fault so it shouldn't cost you anything.
Here is a thread started by another poster with some information about other contacts for pre-fit barrels. rufe-snow mentions Brownells, that has a sterling reputation for service and quality.

As noted above, you don't have a gunsmith, you have a trainee plumber.
Step 1, run, don't walk, away from the guy your using now.
Step 2, find a real gunsmith.
Step 3, treat him like a rare jewel.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0
