Marlin 45-70 Cowboy Model

I have a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in .45 70. It is accurate and a lot of fun. I am looking at the Cowboy Model. I will scope it due to my eyesight. Does any one have one? Does it shoot well? It looks very cool to me and I wonder if it is as accurate as my Guide Gun. I get 1 1/2" groups off the sandbags. I will be using it to shoot Texas hogs this fall again. I can get it local for $525 NIB.

    I'm very happy with mine, but I am having the trigger and action worked over. They are kinda rough. Mine is a hog gun too. Look at my thread about "45-70 powder differences."

    I have an 1895 Guide Gun with a Leupold 2.5x Scout Scope, and an 1895 Cow Boy. The Marbles sights on the Cow Boy really help aging eyes. Both are great shooters! I'm planning on taking the Guide Gun black bear hunting in Pennsylvania in November. The Cow Boy is mostly used for hunting rocks and groundhogs. You won't go wrong with either one.

    One question: If you're going to have the trigger worked on, what are you going to have done? Replacement from Brownells?

    I am fortunate to have a gunsmith who just happens to be the former Oregon state CAS champion. He let me try the action and trigger on "his" guide gun. He said my Cowboy would be the same when when he was done. $125 was a deal for the work.

    By the way, I put a Williams FP peep sight on it and replaced the front sight with the tallest one Williams had available. MUCH easier to use for hunting, targets, etc. than the stock Marbles. I just started wearing glasses and it made a world of difference when I changed sights.

    I, too, have a Guide Gun and am so happy with it I don't know where to start! I have had no work on the gun performed and the accuracy is about an inch using a Williams reciever sight and the sand bags. I have given thought to an action job and a decent scout scope but have decided that any improvement I achieve will likely be miniscule at best! Of the modern guns I own, only the ones with sentimental value come even close to my enjoyment of the MArlin.

    I would NOT suggest you put a scope on the Cowboy. A "period" tang sight or removeable reciever sight should accomplish anything you ned to do with this rifle. If you have any intention of going Cowboy Action Shooting, the scope will make it non Kosher with the rules! After having shot my GG, a close friend decided to get himself a Cowboy gun and opted for the model you are considering. To say he is happy with his choice would be the understatement of the year! While I give it few real world advantages over the GG, I will have to admit that with that long octagon tube hanging off the front of the reciever, it shoots a little better at distance offhand as a result of the barrel preponderance! Additionally, as one would expect, because of the added weight, the gun recoils much more tamely than my GG with the same loads. Steve paid about the same $'s for his, so since that was 2 years ago...you are looking at a fairly good deal. Go for it...you won't be sorry!

    re:scoping it because of eyesight.Mine is about as bad aS it gets,and when I first looked through a tang sight it was a whole new world!Front sight and target were crisp as could be.I leave out the diopters and just use the large hole as a ghost ring.Plenty good enough to ring steel at 135 yds...the extent of my range area.

    Yes it is John. He is also working on my son's 1897 Texan. I'm having a Marbles Tang sight and trigger job done on it.
