Now I have to ask .204 or .220 swift
Subject say it all. I'm going to purchase a Cooper Varmint Extreme. Bit I'd like some advice on calibers. Sounds like barrel wear isn't as big of an issue with the .220 Swift as it used to be. Any other Pro's or Con's I should consider. Thanks.

The Swift held the title as one of (if not THE) fastest factory cartridges for a LONG time (I think it came out in the 30's and is still smokin'!). It looks like the .204 might have taken over this position, but will it stay or fade into obsucurity?
I posted something similar to this on another thread, but I think if you are one of the people who aren't afraid to try unknown stuff in search of the ultimate then I'd check out the Ruger. The .220 Swift can still be loaded much hotter than the factory loadings, but at expense of barrel life, it's all a trade-off. I suspect the .204 found similar compromise.
I don't know what everyone's recommendation between these two will be, but I think this is a much better comparison than the .22-250 vs. .204 was.0 -
The postings are correct. Barrell life goes directly proportional to the pressure you load your cartridges to. I've had a Pre-64 Model 70 for a number of years. The barrell is still good and no accelerated throat erosion. I loaded the cartridges formerly with Hercules Hi-Vel then when that was discontinued used IMR powder #4064 using a 55 gr. Sierra to around 3750 fps. I have had no experience with the .204 but have great respect for the .220. If you decide on the Swift you won't be disappointed. 0 -

Not sure on the .204, but the Swift, when you touch it off,
it go BOOM. If you are using in a populated area or are noise intolerant, the Swift do get your (and others) attention.0
