scope mounting
I mounted a new Burris 4.5-14x42 scope with medium Leupold rings on a Rem. 700 stainless 25-06. My question is there is only about 1mm of clearance between the barrel and scope, I can slide about 3 $1 bills between them. Will the barrel ever expand enough to make it touch the scope, should I get higher rings?

I'm replacing a scope on my Savage 110. The new scope is shorter that the other, so the rings don't line up with the mounts. But, I turned both mounts 180 degrees, to where they are fastened with 1 screw each and half of each mount hangs over the bolt. There is still enough clearance for the shells to be ejected properly. I think this will work, although I haven't shot it yet.(mounts & rings are Weaver)
Is this suitable? Should I use a 1 piece mount instead?

Just answered your own question regarding the Weaver rings.
My procedure is to mount the scope in the rings with the ring screws just tight enough so that it take a bit of effort to turn the scope body in them. I pick out a straight line (building corner, light pole, etc) and look through the scope while shouldered and turn the reticle until it aligns with the vertical object. Then, I point the scope at a neutral object (building wall, big lawn, etc) and determine if the reticle looks straight to my eye. If so, a back and forth tightening of the ring screws (like tightening the lug bolts on a tire - cross hatched) until each just snugs. Keep rotating the tightening until all screws are tight. Check the reticle alignment from time to time while doing this to assure nothing's moved.

The biggest problem here is that many of us hold the gun a little differently so what looks straight to you might look different or canted to the next guy. Great advice been given here though , it takes some tinkering till you satisfied.

Thanks for the advice Kdub and MFI. I have been doing some of the suggestions. Have either of you used any of the products by B Square? the scope alingment aids like the plastic right angle thing or the level with horizontal lines that hooks on with a rubber band? i was wondering if these would help or are they a waste of money? 0 -

Have the rubber band/level unit and tried it with several scopes. If you have a squared receiver in the back of the action it can be used. Most receivers aren't made that way, though. The unit sits on the shelf gathering dust these days.

for the most part... a little time and patience... adjusting a few times if necessary a steady rest and a good eye is what i've always used.... the further you shoot the more critical it is to have you crosshairs straight... 0 -
If the scope looks straight on the vise, but seems canted when you shoulder it, chances are you shoot with a cant. You need to mount the scope on the vise with a cant (opposite cant of what you hold). Then when you shoulder it, it will be straight. Either that or learn to shoot without canting the gun. 0 -
The only way a rifle can be accurate from "o" to 1ooo + yds, is to align the scope cross hairs VERTICLE and HORIZONTAL in relation to the actions BOLT base milling. If you set it to your "canted " hold you will have to allow for horizontal and verticle irregularities,Not a great deal untill you try a 500 yd shot!! The B square 90% plastic "alignment tool (uses the bolt base milling)works perfect, then YOU adjust for the crosshair alignment!!1000yd benchrest shooters don't shoot from a canted position!

IT USUALLY TAKES A FEW ATTEMPTS TO GET WEAVERS SQUARE .I WORK WITH ONE RING TIL ITS RIGHT ,THEN IT SHOULD HOLD AS YOU TIGHTEN THE OTHER .TRY CENTERING THE BOTTOM OF VERTICAL CROSSHAIR TO THE CENTER OF RECIEVER OR REMOVE BOLT AND CENTER IN GROOVE . OR YOU CAN MARK AN + ON THE WALL AND SQUARE WITH LEVEL AND/OR SQUARE, SQUARE RIFLE WITH PLUM BOB USING THE SCREWS IN BUTTPLATE AND ALIGN CROSSHAIRS WITH THE + . LOT OF EFFORT BUT IT SHOULD WORK WELL .
