can a fixed mag s.k.s. use detachables?

I was wondering if you can convert a fixed magazine s.k.s. (59/66 yugo) to accept detachable magazines?

    Hi jstew,

    Yes. The fixed box magazine can be easily detached with a screwdriver and an aftermarket magazine can be directly inserted through the now empty magazine opening in the stock.

    Stay tuned for all the comments on good and evil of removeable magazines for the SKS rifle.

    in some states, counties, towns, municiplalities converting your gun in that fashion could get you in a lot of legal trouble...
    be sure of the legality before making the switch...

    if you take the bayonet off your yugo, which is for curio purposes anyway, you can use detachable mags!!! step #1 firearm empty--#2 bolt closed--#3 safety on-- with punch and hammer, hit the nipple in back of the triggerguard. that releases the trigger group, all in one peice. after that is out, pull back the bolt, and pull the fixed box mag out of the gun.close the bolt, re-install the trigger group, make sure it locks in !!! PULL BACK BOLT CARRIER and rock the detach mag in the firearm. youre done. there are pros and cons about detachable mags, try one for yourself, only you can make the judgement for you !!!!

    The AW ban is not the only thing you need to worry about here. Every imported firearm has to meet certain criteria in order to be acepted as sporting. The GCA of 1968 regulates imports and as far as I know it is illegal to retrofit any SKS with a detachable mag regardless of other features on the rifle... check the laws yourself, it may take some time to hash thru them all...

    The bayonet isn't an evil feature; it's the bayonet mount! So, to avoid making your SKS into a SAW, you'd have to remove the bayonet mount or the grenade launcher.

    It's moot, however. Occasionally we get a report of someone who finds that the removeable mag conversion works, but 99% of those who do it report that it works so badly that it's not worth the effort. These mags just don't work well in the SKS. By the time you push & pull & twist & rap it on the bottom, you could have easily loaded another 10 rounds with a stripper clip & fired them all.

    Now, the fixed 20 round mags work fine, too. But forget about the detachable mags.

    I have a 5 round, 20 round, and 30 round detachable magazines for my sks. Have removed the bayonet mount and bayonet, and have had to slightly modify the magazines to work well, but no big deal. Fired about 350 rounds this past Sunday afternoon; every day is a good day when at the range....

    Your best bet is either the original 10 round fixed magazine or a 20 fixed magazine. The cost of the detachable SKS magazines are not worth the money nor the grief of jamming. You can buy 2-3 AK mags for the price of 1 SKS mag. I would look into converting to detachable AK mags if you are set on having high capacity mags. Check your local laws before proceeding.

    I will continue the topic of the effecitiveness of detachable magazines for the SKS.

    It is a little difficult to believe that it takes more time fiddling with one fifty round detachable magazine than it does to load 5 stripper clips for the fixed magazines.

    I use the detachable magazines on my SKS and I really don't have a problem with them. Sometimes they require some adjustments but mine have all been reliable feeders.

    Am I missing something here?

    If I were to convert my SKS's from a fixed mag to a detachable mag, I personally would convert to AK mags. Like I said you can buy 2-3 AK mags for the price of a detachable SKS mag. Be prepared to pay through the nose for SKS mags, $30-$35 each. Also AK mags are more readily available. Do the conversion to AK mags and be done with it, avoid the high priced SKS mags.

    Heavyiron, I guess if I were going to battle I would be concerned about loading stripper clips instead of fifty round mags. If I were to go to battle I would pack my AR-15 and AK-47 anyway. I do not mean any disrespect, just my opinion that SKS mags are not worth the money.
