Mosin Nagant (Part 2)
Ok fellaz an update: I went to a local gun dealer and had him look at my rifle. He used his bore light and apparently said he seen something in there. I myself looked and couldn't see anything. After getting a "location" of where this problem is I really began to examine it.Now bear with me as I try to explain this, I don't know the proper names for the parts so I'll do my best in explaining them.
With the bolt removed I looked down into the barrel where the bullet would normally sit. Where you would figure it to be a complete round circle it seems to have half of it missing but also looks as if some sort or clip lock is there and I don't know if its supposed to be like that. Along with that I noticed that where that "break" is it seems like its outta round just enough to cause this problem in the 5 oclock posistion.Is it same for me to try to fix it or am I better off paying someone and if so what might ya think someone would charge?

Where I live M-N's are selling between $50 & $100, and it's a buyers market. If you can't fix it yourself, I wouldn't be putting any money into a M-N.

Is there any danger in trying to fix it myself? Things to be careful of and what to do and not do? If theres a lot of risk is causing harm to myself or anyone around me I'll just not worry about it but I would like to fix it 0 -

Don't try to "fix" the rear part of the chamber where the bolt closes.
You are describing the way the chamber is supposed to look on the Mosin Nagant.
Sounds like you took your gun to a guy who doesn't know much about these rifles.
Have you tried to clean your chamber? Get a bore brush for a .45, screw it into a length of cleaning rod, chuck it into a drill. Put some JB bore paste on it. Give that chamber two minutes of cleaning action. Spin a fine thread of 0000 steel wool around the brush, put some Hoppes on it, and give that chamber another few minutes more of cleaning.
You probably can fix this gun yourself, it is just a matter of figuring out what is wrong.
It could be that your ammo won't chamber in this rifle. Occasionally you get a rifle that just won't chamber a particular make of ammo, these guns were made in 8 different countries, ammo made by dozens of manufacturers. Get some different ammo, Sellier and Bellot is top quality. I had a beautiful Finnish M24 that would not chamber any ammo. But, I swapped bolt heads with another Mosin and then it worked fine.

I agree with what Allen said about polishing the chamber to remove any roughness or burrs, with the cravat of not using a steel cleaning rod. If it gets away from you and starts chattering the chamber would be worse instead of better.
You could also use a wooden dowel ( 1/4 / 5/16 ) with it's end split. wrap 400 grit emery cloth around the dowel till it just fits in the chamber. soak the emery cloth with WD 40, chuck it in a drill motor. Very carefully on a trial and error basis polish the chamber. Stop often to clean the grit out and to check if the 7.62 x 54 cartridge is chambering OK.0 -
thanks again for the responses.I'll see what I can do. Heres a pic of it for. The only thing I can tell you is the sight is straight compared to some I've seen that have a circular sight.

Did you try loading a cartridge by hand?
Remove the bolt. Put the muzzle on the floor. Drop a cartridge into the chamber. Get your flashlight and see if it has gone all the way into the chamber.0 -
thats how I've been trying it. I don't have a "clip" for it yet. When I drop it down in it only goes in until it begins get fat, say about 1 inch before fully inserted...looks to me that at the 5 oclock posistion in the chamber is looks a tad bit outta round because it leaves like a 1/4 inch scrape on the casing once I get it out. What would cause such a thing?.I'm really gonna try to get a clear pic of what I'm looking at and maybe that'll help...thx 0 -
I never heard of one that stopped an inch short of the chamber.

Seriously, are you sure you have 7.62x54R Mosin Nagant ammo? That really doesn't sound right.
ps I know the chamber looks out of round but it isn't. I am looking at a $350 collector's grade Finnish Mosin that shoots great and it looks just like yours does.
Unless your rifle was run over by a German tank the chamber could not get "out of round". And if your chamber was "out of round", there would be no way to fix it.0 -
"Clip" for a M-N ... hope your talking about strippers. Anyway, you can hand load the magazine it just takes a little longer, but there is no point until the rifle properly chambers cartridges.
Why don't you start a part 3 and send us a couple digital images of the cartridge, including a close up of the scrape.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
i ordered a batch of 10 of these early this year, when they came it i cleaned them and went to test fire them. one would not chamber a round, after checking with a bore light i found a nasty burr in the chamber. causing a bad scrape on the case and not letting the round chamber all the way. rather than mess with it i sent it back for replacement. it sounds like you have something similar. i could have polished this out (see above post), but was not worth the trouble. 0
