Double Action vs Single Action Revolver

I'm confused. Does double action mean that it has 2 options of how to fire the gun. Or does it mean you have to perform 2 actions to fire the gun? Can someone shed a little light on my confusion?

  Double Action means you can just pull the trigger to fire or pull back the hammer to fire. Single Action means you must pull back the hammer to fire, you can't fire it just by pulling the trigger.

  On a single action revolver you must thumb the hammer back to full cock then pull the trigger to fire. On a double action revolver you have the option just described or simply use the trigger in one full pull to raise the hammer and release it, firing the cartridge.

  Platy, remember, we are only talking revolvers right now. When you talk semi-autos you have a horse of a slightly different color.

  The above answers are essentially correct in that most D.A. revolvers give you a both a single and a double action option. However,there are exceptions in some double action revolvers that don't give you a single action option.
