I bought a Colt New Service at the auction the other day( really legaly stole it)[:D] in 45 long colt,serial number 319xxx, dates it to 1923. My question is that someone shortened the barrel and put a ramp on it and now it looks like a Python on steriods[:0] Was this something that was done a lot back in the 30s,40s,50,???????[}:)][}:)] Any info on this pistol greatly appreciated[^][^][^]

I suspect what you have is a Fourth Model Ehlers Pocket, also known as Model No.1 Improved. Ehlers was treasurer of the Patent Arms MFG and when it went bust, had the remaining pistols and parts assembled and marketed them himself after 1842.

IF (and it has to be a big IF) the gun is genuine, then your friend will have something of great value. With a "loading lever/rammer" attaced as you descibe it will not be the No 1 model though - it will be a marginally later Ehlers 4th or 5th version. Made around 1842. Even so, only around 500 were made, so few have survived. R.L. Wilson has a book you should look at - THE PATERSON COLT BOOK.
Thee are copies - and FAKES - around so take care. As you can see on the attached site - a genuine, but plain, one sold last Dec at auction for around $50,000. That auction house would be a good place to get the gun properly appraised. Take rife-snow's advice. get it professionally checked before you get your hopes up. There are probably more fakes than genuine guns around at this level. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Hi,I have been to allot of sites and is hard to email because if you don't have a gun for sale they won't answer.This gun resembles the pictures you fellows sent but the gun is in much better shape and it is silver in color and it has allot of engravings on it,it even has a little scene around the cylinder.The gun is smaller than your hand.This gun is not in a small case like all of the ones you see on some of the sites.This gun is in a old frame that has a large print of Samuel colt.The frame has a door on it and the pistol sits on wooden pegs under the picture.I don't know if this was made up or if the gun came this way.The picture has colts signature on it.It looks very old but some one many years ago put something on the picture to preserve it.I have a few scanned pictures of the gun and of picture of colt.I will have better pictures next week.If anyone would like to view the pictures let me know and I will email them. 0 -

Some say this gun is a copy and some say it's real.I was at my friends house and he showed me some other colt and they are nice.I took some pictures of the uhler and two other Colts he had with the uhler.If any one would be interested in seeing the pictures please email me.The file size is just under 4 MB so you should have high speed internet to download.Thanks,Joe.0 -

I believe this is a reproduction. Comparison of the pictures with the real thing reveals a number of problems in the shape of the frame and hammer. Look at the shape of the loading cut-out in the barrel lug for example. Compare with <http://gmartin-auctions.com/premdec03/lot1018.htm> 0
