Barrel for M96 swedish

I have a friend who wants to install a different barrel on his Mauser M96. I know there are alot of barrels available for the 98's, But I haven't found any for the 96. If anyone has any info that would be helpful I would appriciate it. Thanks in advance!!!

    Swede 96 Mauser has what is called a "small receiver ring" action. The choice of barrels is limited as compared to the 98 "large ring action".

    This outfit is one of the Midway Companies out of Missouri. They have a limited range of barrels available in .257, 6.5mm & 7mm calibers.

    Thank you rufe-snow, Thats more than I have found so far. But he wants something in .308, which is probably going to be a custom order for a barrel smith. I told him it would probably be cheaper to go ahead and buy a rifle already in .308, but I did some work on the action and trigger just to tune it up a bit and now he loves it, he just doesn't care for the cartridge or the barrel.

    The brass of the .308 fits the bolt like a glove so the only thing he would have to change is the barrel and stock.
    THANK YOU FOR THE INFO who knows maybe I can call these guys and special order a barrel in a more popular caliber than what they show.

    Is the .308 too powerful to shoot safely in a 96 action?

    The 308 is pushing the limit on a Swedish mauser 96 but the receiver will hold up to a 308 Win round. Midway should have a small ring 308 barrel. I believe they sell Adams & Bennett barrels. I built a 35 Wheleen on one of these barrels and it shoots very well. If you can't find a small ring 308 barrel at Midway try Broenwlls. Give them a call and there staf will be more that glad to help you out.
    Another good chois would be a 7mm/08, this is a fine round and will shoot very well also.

    any good gunsmith should be able to fit almost any .308 barrel to a swede m-96. the problem with the small ring mausers is the lenght of the threads varies much more than the m-98 family, so even if you can find a prethreaded barrel you probably will still need some lathe work to fit it.

    Contact Lothar-Walther/USA and ask about what they refer to as 'Article 726' and 'Article 728' barrels. These are newly manufactured barrels with the original military step contour and pre-fit for both the Mauser 98 and Swede 96 model rifle receivers. Pre-fit means that they are both long threaded and long chambered for specific cartridges. You will have to have the shoulder and thread tenon set back to achieve the correct headspace. Generally, this means a trip to the gunsmith since he will have the lathe and headspace gauges to do the work properly. The .308 is listed for both and they are located in Cummings, GA.

    The small ring actions are not recomended for the 308. That is why Midway or Brownells doesnt offer the barrels. The 93,94,95 , and 96 actions are not as safe as the 98.I know that some countries have rebarreled their older Mausers to 7.62 Nato (308) ,namely the Spanish 95 that SOG sells and the Chilean 95. The ammo that they loaded for these wasnt up to commercial USA 308 pressure. I wouldnt rebarrel a Swede to 308 and he will have a hard time getting a knowledgable smith to do so. The Swede cartridge is one of the all time greats . The 96 action is probably strong enough but it lacks the safety features of the 98 ,in case of case rupture or other problems. The 96 is fine for some older rounds like the 250 Savage, 257 Roberts,7x57. 35 Remington all lower pressure rounds like 6.5 Swede. You may build one in 308 and get away with it but why would anyone want to take a chance when good 98 actions are cheaply available and it costs no more to build than on a 96.

    I disagree with the above, the m-96 or m-38 Swedes are the onlt small ring mausers that i would rebarrel to a hi pressure round. even de Hass said this in his book 'bolt action rifles and actions'. The Swedes used the best steel, and the machining is first class. These make the best rifles for any of the 'short action' cartrigdes.

    Mike is correct on his statement about the M96 Swedish Mauser with regards to safety and capability of handling the .308 Win. cartridge. The M96 was made from the finest Swedish steel by some of the world's best craftsmen/women. None of the M96's were made under duress or by slave labor so the product was always at the highest level.

    No, it doesn't have the M98 3rd lug or the gas handling design of the M98 but these don't disqualify the M96 from being re-barreled to a modern cartridge. There aren't any modern current actions on the market today that have the third lug of the M98 except for the Mauser imitators and you don't see gunsmiths holding back from re-barreling any of the current receivers to the most potent cartridges available. Paul Mauser's gas handling design for the M98 is copied by a few manufacturers but you should see where the gas from a catastrophic failure goes on the all of the others. It can give you pause to re-assess. Virtually all of today's receivers have just 2 lugs with only a couple of notable exceptions, Weatherby and Sako as well as one or another that I can't name right now.

    Here is where I also agree with everyone, that the M93, M94, M95 or any of the poorly manufactured Mauser variants SHOULD NOT be re-barreled to a modern high powder cartridge. That includes those mentioned above as well as others from various countries and states of manufacturing. Shoot the original cartridge with original load information and be happy.
