I own a mc Coy match rifle that requires cleaning,Will the removal of the reciever action from its' bedded stock harm the rifle?

    No, it shouldn't hurt it in the least bit. Just pull the trigger group out and pivot the barrel assembly out of the stock. They were made to come apart easily but don't wrench it from side to side or you may disturb the bedding. I love M1's

    Dark...I have to disagree with gottashoots opinion. When Don McCoy beds a stock he beds it extra tight. He believes the tighter the fit the better it shoots. I would say you have no more than 6-8 removals before you essentially destroy the effectiveness of the bedding. I've had my McCoy for over 10 years and have put over 13,000 rounds through it and have removed the receiver exactly once. It's your choice..you want to play with your rifle go ahead...if you want to keep the accuracy that Don put in it then don't mess with pulling the receiver out PERIOD. Now if you live in Southern California you can always go see Don and have him pull it and check it for you. You didn't mention if Don had lugged your rifle as well....That is a whole new dimension to the equation. You can probably call him and get the torque he put on the lug if you do pull it. But honestly you can do all of the cleaning your rifle needs without ever breaking the receiver out of the stock. Don't mess with your McCoy. Beach

    I have not removed the rifle from the stock and it appears to be still in its' original condition.The stock is like fine grade furniture and has the serial number and caliber inscribed on the bolt.As far as the barrel is concerned the numbers are lifted with white lacquer.
    I do live in so.california and will attempt to locate "Don Mc Coy"through the phone directory. Thank You Gentlemen Very much!

    The only real reason to glass bed a stock on any rifle is to lock the action in real tight--the tighter the better. I have a M1 that was bedded in 1988 by Fulton Armory and it has not been out of the stock since. It still shoots better than I ever will and as mentioned you can clean the rifle without removing the action. My take is if it ain't broke(still shooting with accuracy), don't tamper with it and just enjoy the marvelous piece of work that you are fortunate enough to own.
