Mosin Nagant
I recently bought a Mosin from a person and attempted to shoot it today only to find out the bullet gets hung up while trying to load it into the chamber. I put a mark on the bullet and found at around the 5 oclock spot a spot that looks like theres maybe a burr inside the barrel catching it. It leaves like a scrape mark. I looed as best as I could and can't seem to find anything. What options do I have? Is there some sort of a round file I can use?. Does it need professional help or should I just chalk one up for getting shafted? There has to be a way to fix this..any suggestions would be appreicated..Thanks

I want to add a Mosin Nagant to my very small collection. For those of you who are into these thing, which models, years, and arsenal marks (I assume Tula) are most desireable? What are the best sources?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
There could be a couple things causing the problem.
Can you insert a single round directly into the chamber without the cartridge hanging up? If so can you fire it and operate the bolt to extract the round?
If you have problems inserting a cartridge by hand then there may very well be something with the wall of the chamber. DO NOT go and try filing the chamber. Get a gunsmith to look it over.
If you have no problems inserting a cart. by hand then firing and extracting it you may have a problem with your magazine spring/follower. Could be something as simple as it needs a good cleaning.
If you can't see any problems with the magazine/follower then it's best if you have a gunsmith check it out. That would have been the safe thing to do when you bought it as you never know what your getting with used firearms, especially the older mil. surplus.
Nagant's are good shooters and ammo is fairly inexpensive. With a good one you can have many hours of shooting enjoyment.

What kind of ammo ( bullet composition and profile ) are you using? Sometimes softpoint hunting ammo hangs up when run through the magazine.
I got a military Swede long rifle, that has to be used as a single shot when shooting softpoints.0 -
I had a similar problem with a SMLE in .308 caliber. My cartridge case was being scratched though, instead of the bullet. I was able to find a burr near the rear of the chamber with the help of a good bore light. A couple or three light strokes of a small round chain saw file removed it. Then I polished it with 600 grit abrasive cloth on a piece of dowel rod. It has worked perfectly since. Be careful when doing home gunsmithing. It's easy to do too much and ruin a firearm. The best bet is to have an expert look at it. Problem is sometimes the gunsmith bill can be more than an inexpensive gun is worth. That's why I've learned a few do it yourself tricks over the years. You did not get taken for a ride. It is common to have feeding problems with the Mosins. But, it is simple to fix them. Parts are plentiful and cheap.

so does this mean the Mosins are junk? I won't be offended by honest replies. I just recently got into WW2 weapons and figured a rifle is a rifle, didn't do much research. Regardless, I'm gonna try to fix it and have some target shooting fun, but I would like to know if these things have or will have any value or is it alright to shoot the hell out of it? I do see them average on the web for $100-$200. I got this non firing headache for $140..lol

I have a Mosin M-44 and it is not a piece of junk!
I also had trouble when I first obtained the rifle with feeding fromt the magazine. After using it for a while, it broke in and the feeding problem has not re-occurred. I believe many of these rifles are aresenal rebuilds or new our of the arsenal and therefore, have not been uesed to wear away the rough edges.
I think you will find that these rifles are solid, reliable and will perform well with decent ammunition. I use mine for a shooter with an 8x42mm Russian scope with illuminated reticle. It is great fun.

The rifles are not "junk" what the poster was trying to say is that they wre designed to be VERY simple to maintain.
If your concerned about $$$. Pull the bolt, use a VERY bright light (Surefire of similar would be really good) and first examine from the chamber end, then shine the light back down the barrel from the front.
If as you say, you can not insert a cartridge by hand, then there should be something noticeable. Use the email icon at the top of this reply to drop me a note about what you see and we can figure out a next step for ya.

You might try cleaning the chamber with a chamber brush, or a brass brush for a .410 shotgun if you can't find a chamber brush. The chambers on these have to be scrubbed from time to time, and something might be stuck in the buildup. 0
