winchester model 94 44 mag

Howdy from Texas! My son has a Winchester 94 in 44 Mag. He has shot it a lot in the last year or so. It has started allowing a cartridge to pop out of the magazine, below the feed ramp, thereby jamming the gun. In other words, it is feeding a cartridge into the mechanism, but as you go to close the action it allows another to pop out UNDER the feedramp, stopping the action from being closed. Several times this has happened, and I have had to work the loose round back into the magazine from underneath in order to close the gun. Has anyone seen this happen before? Has he worn out a certain part? I notice that when you put slight pressure on the lever, it drops several inches, partially opening the action. It seems loose. Has he worn it out? Sorry to be so long winded. As usual, any help is appreciated. Barry L.

    I had a new 94 in 357mag that would do the same thing , I can't remember the name of the part , cartridge stop maybe ??? anyway the part the keeps the cartridge in the tube it was a little to short , i had a gunsmith weld it up just a bit and then it was ok , sounds like your sons rifle may have become worn in this area, take it to a smith and have it checked out ,,, hope this helps ,, good luck

    I'd say gskyhawk is probably right, if not check the spring on it too (I believe it's controlled by a spring, it's been a long time since I've had one of those apart though).

    GO TO WINCHESTER-GUNS.COM AND LOOK AT THE PARTS LIST. WILL GIVE YOU THE CORRECT NAME FOR YOUR PART. GOOD LUCK.

    Folks, thanks so much for the info. I suspect you are all right. I've looked, and this small wedge is supposed to stick up and stop the next round from popping out. That probably is the culprit. Once again, I appreciate your help. Stay cool and happy shooting. Barry L.

    THE CORRECT PART IS THE 'LINK'. IT HAS A SMALL 'TIT' THAT STOPS THE NEXT SHELL FROM FEEDING. THE NEWER M-94'S (POST 1964) LINKS ARE MADE FROM CAST STEEL AND THIS 'TIT' BREAKS OFF EASYLY. THEY CANNOT BE WELDED (I'VE TRIED). BROWNELL'S HAS THEM (PART # 910 303 005, ABOVE SER. # 5,550,001).

    I have one that does that, if you dont push the lever all the way forward. If you only go 3/4 of the way forward it will jam every time, because the shell underneath, prevents the action from closing.
