After the Ban Sunsets Question

Would it be cheaper to buy a pre ban upper or thread the upper I have for a flash supressor?

    It would be much cheaper to thread the barrel. However, then you would not have a bayonet lug. Usually barrel threading runs $60-$120.

    don't hold your breath regarding the sunset. there is too much politics involved and if i were a betting man, i'd bet at least 20-1 against sunset.

    Yeah, I think you're right. The democommies will let it die so that they can introduce one that will cover just about all semi-auto rifles, and go beyond just cosmetics, and make it permanent.

    Dont worry about threading your barrel. You can get an AR-15 barrell, (Preban) with bayonet lug and flash supressor from M&A Parts (See Shotgun News) for just a little over 100.00. Not that much trouble to change the barrel and since they are mil-spec, Ive used dozens of them and all checked OK on headspace. If the ban is over then they will e legal to put onto post ban receivers

    What I belive they will do is list all true semi- autos as Destructive Devices Like they did the street sweeper in the late 80's one day you could buy them like any other shotgun the next day they where class 3.

    The size of the ATF would have to increase by about 100 times before that could happen; it also would affect too many people--representatives would be overwhelmed will complaints from their constituents.

    That's not to say what you suggest won't happen eventually--in fact I'd agree it's a very likely direction for future gun control in this country--it just won't "overnight" like the Street Sweeper, etc. It will take another NFA passed by Congress and signed by the President.

    Make sure the smith knows what he is doing to thread the barrel.
    Just got 2 back that were off on the slope of the thread pitch.
    Bullets were hooking a quick left & down.
    Hope cockroaches invades his (gunsmiths) shorts!!!
    Back at square 1.

    IAMACLONE_2: What you are describing is not thread pitch, or slope. It has to do with aligning the thread with the bore of the barrel. A lot of gunsmiths are not machinists and do not know how to do this operation.

    If the thread pitch (threads per inch) or slope (angle of thread sides) were off, the piece would not even thread on.

    Your mileage may vary.
