Fowler shots

Several of my varmint rifles will not shoot the first bullet where it is supposed to go. At the range the first 2 or 3 shots jump around the target. The 3rd or 4th round goes rite on zero and will shoot same hole all day. I'd like opinions on the cause/s and how to rectify it. Thanks

    Hello 2 things come to mind If you clean your rifle and then go to the range You need to run a dry patch thru the bore .oil or grease in the bore is not good except for storage. The second is improper bedding on rifle can cause shift in impact as barrel heats up but the chance on several rifles having bedding problems is not all that great.

    You may be over cleaning your barrel!!!

    Fact- All barrels have tiny microscopic flaws that over time and with your breakin period are filled in a bit.
    Case and point when you clean your rifle, clean out all powder residue but don't do a 1hr scrub with the brush or you will remove all of these fill deposits actually decreasing accuracy on your first few shots.

    However keep in mind it is benificial to do a good scrub every once in a while.

    That is also why I don't reccommend using moly-coated bullets for breakin.I also agree with perry shooter on using a dry swab on the barrel before shooting. Hope this helps[:D]

    This is why after carefully zeroing-in a rifle with a certain hunting load, the rifle gets a throurgh cleaning, then proof shot with a 3 or 5 round group. The rifle remains fouled for the rest of the hunting season, then gets a good cleaning again before stored away.

    Must agree with River and Kdub. After dry patching oil etc. after
    the cleaning, the first shot is a throw away shot even then. We called it the "fouling shot". After that, except for the heat, it remained
    pretty constant in grouping. Most of the time I just put the first shot into the berm and used the other 2 as "sighters" prior to the match.
    This was when one was allowed 3 "sighting shots" prior to the match.
