Semi-auto assault rifles

okay, an AR-15 or AK is considered a semi-automatic weapon because they fire a round everytime you pull the trigger and another round is immediately replaced after the spent round is ejected.

Im fairly sure what youre talking about is the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban which bans certain accessories to the weapon like telescoping stocks and high capacity magazines. You are authorized to have one of the accessories, but you cant have two or more on the same gun (someone correct me if Im wrong). In either case, the ban expires this September on the 13th, unless major legislative overhaul is undertaken.

if you see a "pre-ban" rifle on GunBroker or some other place, its talking about the 94 ban, meaning it has certain features that are now banned.

Thanks I believe I understand, as long as no more than 1 accessory is present the gun is legal.

    Example:
Detachable clip and thumbhole stock would be legal, but not a detachable clip and a folding or teloscoping stock.

What else does the ban cover? I am pretty sure they cover flash surpressors but I still don't know how they differ from muzzle breaks. But what about lasers and scoping equipment? I was told by a LEO lasers were not legal to have on anything unless you are target shooting.

I've never heard of lasers being taboo in the 94 ban, but while your digging around on the ATF site they should have a list of the items.
actually, you can just go to awbansunset.com and they have the full list for the ease of the decent gun owning public [:)]

Cameron, the advice you got was true (at least here in Wiscosnsin) we don't allow hunting with laser sights. Red Dots are ok, but not lasers.

Sorry Cameron, but you are REALLY confused. You are looking in the right area - the ATF FAQ section; just take your time & read ALL of them.

ACTUALLY, YOU CAN HAVE "NO MORE THAN TWO" OF THOSE ACCESORIES. SO YOU CAN HAVE A PISTOL GRIP AND A DETACHABLE MAG, (BOTH INHERENT IN THE DESIGN OF THE AR-15 AND THE AK-47. AND THE FEATURES ARE, PISTOL GRIP, DETACHABLE MAGAZINE, FLASH SUPPRESSOR, BAYONET LUG, COLLABSIBLE STOCK, AND GRENADE LAUNCHER. SORRY, NO LASERS ARE NOT AFFECTED BY THE BAN, YOUR FRIENDLY LEO WAS WRONG. AND CAMERON, THEY ARE MAGAZINES, NOT CLIPS.

platypusman: The sunset of the 9-13-94 ban will not create any more Colt AR-15 rifles, which were discontinued in the early 1980s. Colt has not made an AR-15 since then, and no one else does. It is a Colt trademark. The sunset of the ban will not create any Pre-ban rifles of any make, but it may allow manufacture of new rifles with Pre-Ban features.

If the ban sunsets, manufacturers may well offer AR-15 clone rifles with all the Pre-Ban features, such as flash hiders, bayonet lugs and collapsible stocks. I am quite sure Bushmaster, Olympic and ArmaLite will, but I am doubtful about Colt.

When Colt removed the bayonet lug and added receiver blocks and large pins to its rifles to prevent the installation of M16 parts, that was done for political correctness and to deflect criticism from anti-gunners. While Colt SHOULD give up all those modifications, I cannot see it happening. For reasons I cannot figure out, Colt managment decisions are seldom good for business.

Cameron203: A flash hider hides flash, and a muzzle brake (not break) brakes (reduces) recoil. What you see on the muzzle of a Post-ban ArmaLite, for instance, is a muzzle brake, while what you see on the muzzle of a Colt AR-15 is a flash hider. If you look closely at them, you will see the difference.

I never understood why so few manufacturers failed to maintain Pre-Ban apeparance by installing a dummy flash suppressor with no real openings, just sealed fake openings. Post-Ban Norinco (or was it Poly-Tech?) M-14 clones are the only ones tha come to mind. To me, a Post-Ban Colt Match Target rifle with a plain muzzle looks very odd. A dummy flash hinder would have looked so much better.

there wont be more AR-15s after the ban sunsets, but they will then be manufactured with flash suppresors and bayonet lugs. if you are looking for a good ar-15 i would wait until the ban sunsets, and then buy one of the ar-15s that was affected by the ban, the sunset of hte ban should drive the demand for AR-15s with plain barrels and no bayo lugs down, and i would hurry up. i wouldent be suprised to see the libs introduce a bill that really does ban ARs and AKs. stock up now.

I always worked under the assumption that an assault weapon was "full auto capable" and could be switched from rock n roll mode to semi-auto by flipping the lever, or vice versa.

What the press calls "assault weapons" are firearms styled like the military full auto, large capacity magazine types that are already regulated by the federal government. Their terminology is geared to get an emotional response from those people who know nothing about firearms, and are primarily incapable of thinking for themselves.

    my two cents worth

John, what the press & the gun-grabbers call "assault weapons" are generally what the Gun Control Act of 1968 describes as "semi automatic assault weapons". This is a propaganda tool known as "poisoning the well"; by applying an evil-sounding name to a large class of sporting guns, they plant the public perception that all of them are "evil".

You are correct; "assault weapons" are Class III guns that have been controlled since 1928.

The Special Weapons SW3's (H&K clone) come with a flash hider with a steel sleve welded to the inside.

A true "assualt" rifle shoots fully automatic or 3 round burst. Gennealy these types of guns are illegal for citizens to own. So, a semi-automatic rifle (one trigger pull, one shot) is merely a semi-automatic rifle not much different from a 100 year old revolver in that one trigger pull equals one shot.

The term "assaualt" is a lie to make it look like some of the guns we own are somehow military weapons that are too dangerous for civilians to own. Don't fall for this lie or let other fall for it.

Quote "Somehow government decided that the Constitutional Bill of Rights has become the Bill of "Suggested" Rights and are to be rationed to the citizens as the power elite sees fit"

Ok got a question On semi auto's according to Guns & ammo magazine for august, maybe our future president ( Kerry ) will make ( ALL ) semi auto's illegal, but isnt there semi auto shotguns ? & will they be affected by this ban, if he gets into office ?

Last year Kerry joined Shumer, Feinstein, & Kennedy in co-sponsoring legislation that would have made many common guns, including semi-automatic shotguns, illegal; that legislation failed.

Kerry's election, by itself, will have no effect on any current gun laws. However, if future legislation aimed at banning certain guns IS passed by Congress, it is a certainty that it will be signed by Kerry if he is elected. That is why it is so important that we elect people with integrity to serve us in Congress.
