Oddball serial on Mosin-Nagant

I have a 91/30 Tula Rifle with a serial on the reciever of the Russian characters:

* 10 (the thing that looks like a 10 but its one character) followed by a 94.

The buttplate, receiver, and everything else just shows a 94 (no other characters before or after).

I believe it is a 1937 gun. I will have to look again.

I ran the * and 10 characters together through a translator and it comes out like a Russian last name mayby, gobbledegook to me...

Any clues?

    I cannot answer your question about what the symbols mean if this is your question.

    I am guessing but the symbols are probably cyrillic which is the type of alphabet used by the Russians. The cyrillic alphabet does not look like our Roman symbols and theirs appears more like the Greek alphabet.

    If you could find someone fluent in Russian, they made be able to interpret the symbols.

    That "10" symbol is a vowel, pronounced "yu", as in "soyuz" It is the 32nd of the 33-character Cyrillic alphabet.

    Since I have been studying Greek lately, I'll give a more direct translation of the Thermopylae Monument: "Stranger, tell the Lakedaemonians that in agreement with their customs, we lie here."

    some interesting information...

    the ATF currently requires all MOSIN NAGANT rifles (as well as others makes and types) to have a new SER# applied with an electric pencil. the original russian SER#`s are done in a differant way then we are used to. the #`s run from JAN-DEC in a calander year, and then they start over again. theoreticly you could have 10 M91/30 rifles, from ten consecutive years all with the same SER#.

    this practice (the electric penciled ATF compliant new SER#`S) has been in affect for awhile. i know a collector who owns 2 M 91/30 SNIPER RIFLES made in differant years with identical SER#`S. both guns are not import stamped, and there is some debate as to whether he is in violation of 1 or more laws...

    for example...
    one of my MN`s has the original # AB33XX, but a new engraved # M910XX...

    just some random thoughts...
