tight chokes and large shot
It's been made clear that tight chokes don't work with steel shot.
What's the rule about buckshot and turkey chokes, or large pellets of hevi-shot? Case in point, if I have a turkey choke of .665, how large of pellets can I use through it?

The same stands true with buckshot, what happens is the tight constriction of the shot column actually makes the shot bounce off of each other and spread out more. I regularlly hunt deer with OO buckshot and have found that a choke tube made especially for large shot works best, I use the pattern master choke tube which guarantees 100% shot placement in a 12 inch circle at 40 yards. This performance doesn't come cheap the pattern master runs around $80. Another rule of thumb with larger shot is that a parallel section within the choke tube equal to or longer than the shot column works best. Good luck....

You can actually use buckshot to hunt deer? I thought that only slugs were legal. What state do you live in that it is legal?

Mooseyard: I wasn't looking to use it on deer, but more likely than not, coyotes (and whatever else tries to sneak up on me in the woods)0 -
Buckshot is legal in S.Carolina.... It's preferred to slugs when hunting in front of dogs... 0 -
Buck shot legal in Va. for jump shooting deer in swamps and heavy cover, also when using dogs...
