effective range of 7.62x39
I have been looking all over for ballistic tables but haven't been able to find any that will tell me the "effective range" of a standard 7.62x39 round. How far out will this round maintain a decent trajectory and a 800-1000 lbs of energy from a 20 inch barrel or so. Any insight our direction in where to find such info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

ker2222,
Hi. The effective range of the 7.62x39mm is about on a par with the .30-30. Energy at 100 yard is about equal to the .30-30 and surpasses the .30-30 by 20% at 200 yards.
Still the 7.62x39 is limited in range. You will probably get varying opinions on the effective range, but probably somewhere between 150 to 200 yards is the maximum.

If you'll check out some ballistic tables, you'll find that 'heavyiron' is right. It's REAL close to the .30-30.

Check out Chuck Hawk's website (I think chuckhawks.com). It will give ballistic/energy/trajectory etc info. for almost any cartridge, including the 7.62X39.
The others are right, too, almost identical to the .30-30. Using that as your general guideline, you're talking 150 yards with any real confidence, 200yds seems a stretch, but not totally out of the question with an alright scope.0 -
According to a show on the History channel(tech effect) about the bank robbery in L.A., the effective range of an AK 47 is 400 meters, and able to fire 600 rounds per minute. Said the AR15 can only fire 45 rounds per minute. Oh, they also said that the 9mm pistol cartridge is effective to 100 yards. 0 -
Yeah my dad was talkin about that earlier. According to the history channel the 9mm is an effective weapon from 50 out to 100 yards. 0 -
Several guys in our hunting group has used Mil-surp guns in this chambering to take deer over the years. If they are accurate enough then 150 isn't unheard of. One of the guys shoots a bolt gun chambered in that round and also shoots non-mil-surp ammo and he's taken several deer with his well over 200 but I'd consider this the exception NOT the norm. 0
