Which powder works best for 223 in Dillon measure?
I am loading 223's on my Dillon 550 machine. I have tried H335 powder but it is so fine, that it tends to dribble from the powder measure after charging the case. Does anyone use a Dillon powder measure to charge their 223 cases, and if so, which powder would you recommend. I am loading 50 grain Hornady V-Max bullets.

BLC2 or H335 work great in my 550B.

In my Dillon 550 I use 23.8 grains of VARGET to push a Hornady 75 grain BTHP. I get reasonably accurate groups from that load. Beach 0 -

I'd say that at a max it could be +/- .1 grain. I have had as high as 24.0...still don't know how that happened and as low as 23.6. But usually it's right where it should be right on the money. I measure about 2 loads in 20 to make sure it's staying consistent and the variance for me is acceptable. Now I'm shooting across the course from 200-600 yards with my cadets and none of them is a threat to make the Palma Team. If you are bench rest shooting or making long range super accurate varmint loads, I think I would individually measure the powder for every round rather than using the Dillon charger. Beach 0 -
Chris, if it's "acceptable" for Beach, it means it is more than good enough for us lesser mortals shooting casually.

check with dillon, you may have a measure problem. varget and blc/2 work fine in mine (usuualy std. dev.<10 fps). 0 -

I think that Mike has the right suggestion; call Dillon. My 550 will throw very consistant charges with several ball powders without 'dribbling'. Dillon has a lifetime warrantee/guarantee on their products and they WILL stand behind their presses and they don't care if your are the 1st, 2nd or third owner. Note they have Saturday hours also.

Mike Wiskey has made the Right Call....Give Dillon a Call on the Phone...1-800-323-4570...ask for Gary Kieft....Tell Him I said Hello while you're asking about What Powder to use...etc...Keep in Mind that Mike Dillon has spent 1000's of Dollars designing and manufacturing these press's...so that the Guess Work was taken out of the equation.......best.....

Here's some insight on the dillon powder mesure. the charging guide that slides in the powder mesure die for your cal. most likely has a small flat at the top of the funnel. a rcbs case champher tool has a slightly greater angle which you can bring it, the charging guide to a sharp point. this will eliminate 90% of the drible. the next step is to be sure the charging guide is pushing the powder mesure to it's Max travel. I found mine had to be modified to allow to travel a little further than the factory travel to give me perfect charges every time. it seems the powder could hang up in the v-groove in the charging bar before the final mod. my favorite powder is N-135. good luck 0
