Most Accurate Slug Gun . . . Shotgun
Hello: I'm looking for an extremely accurate slug gun for deer hunting in Iowa. I realize the terms "accurate" & "slug gun" should probably not go together, but if there's a real gem out there I'd like to hear about it. Pump, auto, even bolt, I'd listen to any suggestions. I've been told that the 20 gauges are more accurate, but would prefer to stick with 12 gauge (but I'll still listen). I'm assuming the rifled barreled slug guns are more accurate, so if there's a preference for a certain sabot slug that would be helpful also.

I am also an Iowa slug hunter and have shot a number of deer. I use a Remington M1100 with the Monte Carlo stock, rifled bore, cantilever mount on the barrel and use Lightfield Sabots. This is probably not the most accurate slug gun, but mine will group 4" at 100 yards, if I can take the recoil enough to try and group it. I use a 4X scope. My only complaint is that many times at longer range, the sabots will not shoot thru and leave a good blood trail. I have a friend that uses a rifled Mossberg 500 pump with scope, but he uses the regular federal slugs. They shoot real well and also shoot thru the animal leaving a good trail. I hear that some of the bolt actions shoot real well, but unless you intend to do something with this gun, other than hunt deer, I think any of the current models will be satisfactory. 0 -
I forgot to mention one very important item. Most of the slug guns have a horrible trigger pull which does not help the accuracy. I worked my trigger over so that it breaks clean at 4 lbs., but if you don't know what you are doing, take it to a good gunsmith. A good trigger helps more than anything with getting good groups with any gun. 0 -
I also hunt deer in Iowa, I use a remington 870 with a rifled barrel, I shoot the Winchester Partition Gold sabots 1900FPS (385 grains I beleve) , this gun is about as accurate as I can shoot an open sight gun, I bought a new barrel for this year with a cantiliver scope mount on it, havent shot the new barrel yet. 0 -
Nice to see so many fellow Iowan's on board....currently have 6 slug guns, Remington's, Browning's, Benelli's, hands down the most accurate is the Benelli Black Eagle (rifled barrel/scope). Tests by "Shooting Times Magazine" a few years ago came to the same conclusion, but ammo is a big factor. 0 -
Rembrandt beat me to it... I've had several slug guns over the years and the most accurate by far was the Benelli Super Black Eagle. I think part of its success is due to the fact that the top half of the receiver is part of the barrel so when you mount a scope to it - it stays there. After the season when you put the regular barrel back on (if you have both sets) the scope stays completely zeroed.
Oddly, one of the ones that people don't talk about a lot any more that rated 2nd among the slug guns that I owned, was an Ithaca 37 pump. They aren't expensive, and maybe I just happened to get a good one but it was nearly as accurate as the Benelli (these two were MUCH better than the rest of what I've tried). These old Ithaca's can be had rather cheaply now too.
Also, there's quite a few aftermarket companies now that make decent barrels to put on your existing shotgun (if you have one) that will suprise you.0 -

I'm rather fond of my H&R slugster single barrel. Bull barrel, scope rail drilled to 12 or 20 gauge which I have both. My 14 yr old daughter shoots the 20, my 12 has taken deer at around 100 yards and they both are tack drivers. Plus they won't break you buying one[:D]

I think the most pertinent questions are: 1) which slug gun can I shot the best? & 2) How much accuracy do I need?
Is a gun that costs $ 1,000 and shoots 1 " groups at 100 yards really worth twice as much as a gun that costs $ 500 and shoots 1 1/2 " groups at 100 yards? If you are going to hunt with it and not just punch paper, you'd never know the difference.
The most accurate gun I've shot is a cheap old Mossberg 695 rifled bolt action. 1 5/8" groups at 100 yards with 400 grain Winchester Platinum tip sabot (my favorite load). Unfortunately, I just didn't shoot the thing that well under hunting conditions - plus the trigger sucked on it.
I switched to a Remington 11-87 with the rifled cantilever barrel. The best group I've gotten out of it is 1 7/8" at 100 yards - so it isn't as accurate as the Mossberg. But I can shoot the 11-87. Plus an advantage to a common gun is that everybody will work on it or makes something for it. Want a trigger job, no problem. I sent the trigger only to Allan Timney. He sent it back in about a week and it is the best trigger on any gun I own. A big reason why I shoot this gun well.
Don't get hung up on pure accuracy over everything else.0 -
Im from Iowa too! I shoot and old Winchester 97 for deer hunting ,it has never failed. Some times it slams fire, But it has been very accurate over the years,I also have Benell Black Eagle,I seem to want shoot a lot more with it.[:D] 0
