need help fast
my husband has a 9 millimeter gun and it was placed in a damp spot. now there is surface rust on the outside of the gun. can anyone tell me how to get that off? i moved the gun several weeks ago so no one would know where it was and when i went back to get it, it had the rust on it. my husband would die if he knew it was like that. can anyone please tell me how to remove the rust so i can clean it up and get it back before he finds out? thanks in advance.

A rag and gun oil will take off surface rust.

just tell him - I wouldn't anyone else trying to remove rust from my gun - it will be ok 0 -
cotton cloth and some wd40 then when it is all clean and with out rust some silicone spray to make it really shine. My 2 cents [8D]

JM2C, I would go and tell him what happened. Nobody was hurt and it can be repaired,(he wont die) besides he may know how to repair the damage or want to take it in to a shop. Fess up and take your medicine, the worse that can happen is you buy him a new one. Also you did not say what kind of 9mm and what finish is on the gun. If it is blued or parkerized it could be bad. I have seen stainless rust but wipe off. Post the make, model and finish (NO SERIAL #)and you'll get better advise.

Put it back where he left it originally and act surprised. It was a much his fault as yours. If he had it properly protected, it wouldn't have happened anyway. I just found my pistol case with 2 blued handguns that I forgot in my trunk for the past 2 humid weeks. There was not a spot of rust on either one because they were properly protected. 0 -
BTW, my wife and I are just about to celebrate our 40th aniversary, so I speak from experience when I tell you that honesty isn't always the best policy! 0 -

well congrats on your anniversary! that is terrific! i hope that my husband and i will last that long. i hear ya about honesty not being the best policy...some things they just don't need to know.

bikerchick, I'm going to go against the flow here a bit and make a different suggestion. You say you have no knowledge of firearms "i have no idea about guns". That being the case, you don't know how to handle the 9mm safely. It may not be loaded, but it may be - and you don't know how to be sure it is safe *to* clean. Further, but greatly subordinate to the first concern, you don't know how to open it up to see if there is rust on internal parts. This firearm needs a thorough inspection!
See if you can have one of your friends (or a friend of your husband) *who really knows what they are doing* help you here. If not, come clean with the old man. Far better he be pi$$ed than have a hole somewhere, perhaps in yourself. Note I specifically am not directing you to a gun shop here. You don't know if it is loaded and almost certainly you would violate some law taking a loaded firearm (and perhaps even an unloaded one) to a shop, which could have even more severe consequences than an irate husband.
Firearms are not something for the uninformed to handle. You shouldn't have moved it in the first place given your level of knowledge. If you aren't happy about its location have *him* move it. Now if you can't get outside help to do the job properly, just face up to the music. The potential downsides far outweigh your husband's anger. Like someone else noted, at worst the pistol is wrecked and you owe him a new one. More likely, you will owe him the cost of a professional examination & cleaning and in the best case, it will be something entirely superficial which he can cure himself and forget.
Bottom line - don't turn a regrettable error into an even bigger one!!!
