can anyone explain this to me?
Ok, so I'm in my favorite gunshop two days ago (again), and I'm reading the sign on the wall. It's about the Youth Handgun Protection Act, or whatever they call it, and as I read it, I see a line that says 'except under limited circumstances, it is illegal to sell a handgun to any person under the age of 18.' 18??? What's up with that? Last time I checked, you have to be 21 to buy a handgun, so what's that all about? Anyone have a better understanding about gun laws than I do, feel free to enlighten me. Thanks.

The law states Federal law prohibits, except in certain limited circumstances, anyone under 18 years of age from knowingly possessing ( not purchasing) a handgun, or any poerson from selling delivering, or otherwise transferring a handgun to a person under 18. 0 -
you have to be 21 to purchase from a dealer only... private sales to those under 21 over 18 is ok (fed law, state laws vary)

Yes, I wonder if there is some mis-leading / incomplete info here. I believe those under 21 cannot possess a handgun...let alone purchase.
Exceptions would be military personnel, police (in some states I believe you can be 18 and a police officer), while under the supervision of a parent/legal gaurdian.
I'd LOVE to be corrected if I am mistaken here...

Some states (Pennsylvania, for instance) allow "possession" for things such as hunting at a younger age.

Im not sure about everywhere else, but New Mexico (my current residence) allows ownership of a handgun when youre only 18. My parents signed the papers for a Beretta as a graduation present. Here, its just the purchasing that is 21. 0
