reloading 9MM

Several people say why bother with reloading 9MM because of the low price for factory rounds. But, I enjoy the reloading step of the hobby. The questions. What type of primer would be best? I will be doing mostly plinking with a carbine. Also what powder and powder weight would work good? What about bullet weight? Thanks

    Hi guys,
    I've just recently begun reloading my own 9mm ammo and am having a bit of a problem. I am using a Lee press with a RCBS three die set. I am having trouble with the crimp depth. The info that came with the dies states that the crimp should be within .0005 to .001 of the rear of the case. I barely have any crimp on the cases and am still getting over a .005 discrepency in the measurement. I'm using federal cases and am not sure if they're pre tapered (if there is such a thing) or not. Any help would b greatly appreciated!!!

    I use Winchester primers, with Winchester 231 powder(You have to look up the charge, I won't take responsibility for that), and 115 gn FMJ bullets. The Winchester primers are great, and the 231 powder is fast burning and clean, and works good in most progressive loaders.

    Small pistol primer. I like CCI. 115grain projectile FMC for plinking. Any powder charge that will move 115gr at 1000fps. My 2 cents [8D]

    Hello you will need to use small pistol primers even in your carbine because small rifle primers will be same diam. as small pistol However the rifle primer is TALLER if you try to load with rifle primers you could get a SLAM fire because it will not be flush with head of cartridge/ quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    Stick with standard small pistol primers. I like anything but CCI products (bad "suggested starting load" data in manual No.8 bent two S&W's - data for 4756 was subsequently dropped without even a "see ya, sucker" from the company. Later, a CCI Blazer 9mm round destroyed a P-38. The company wouldn't answer the phone on that one. Last straw was the purchase of CCI .38/357 shotshells that were loaded in floor sweepings, one headstamped W-W +P+. Came in a sealed box off the dealer's shelf ). The 9mmP works well with fast powders, 231 being cooler and cleaner than many. With any powder, cross check the data from several sources. Be conservative. Remember, if you need a lot more power, get a gun with a bigger hole.
