Smith & Wesson model 1917 45 cal

Does anyone know if their are any other cartridges you can shoot in a Model 1917 S&W besides 45acp and 45 autorim ?

    Both the S&W and Colt M1917 were built to fire .45ACP only. After WWI, various ammo manufacturers brought out .45 Auto Rim (a rimmed version of .45ACP) to eliminate the need for "moon" clips.

    Other models were built on the same frames....S&W's .44 Hand Ejector and Colt's New Service and Shooting Master....and were available in other large bore calibers, but the 1917s were made to only fire the .45ACP and .45AR.

    Just wanted to know if there was something a little more powerful than the 45acp to use in this pistol that would not cause damage to the pistol or myself. I also didi not like haveing to use the half moon clips but the 45 auto rim ammo is just to expensive. If that is all it is made to handle then that is all I will use. Thank you for the information.

    I use the full moon clips, work just like speed loaders.

    I also use the full moon clips. You would be surprised how fast you can reload with them. I can reload as fast as an auto with them.
