Mini-14 Hammer

I just helped the old man disassemble and clean his Mini-14 tonight, and I was wondering about the hammer and the weird little hook hanging off of it to the left of what I presume is the contact face. Can anyone give some insight into this? Is it to enforce premature falling of the hammer, and thus different on the AC556, or does it serve some other purpose? Thanks!

    ZERODIN,
    I believe what you are referring to is a kind of bolt lock assist.Im not sure what the technical name for it is. But its function is to help keep the bolt from rotating before it is charged.

    This is the function to the best of my knowledge.Hope its helpful[:)]

    Makes some sense, I guess. I'm trying to understand how the Mini-14 operates, and there just aren't the drawings, CAD animations, and so forth that I found online when I decided to learn how the AR-15 and M16 work.

    Get out the manual that comes with it and then using just the lower trigger group (removed from receiver and stock_ exercise it (i.e. hold the hammer down pull the trigger let the hammer go forward slow). You'll figure it out, I did.

    I played with the trigger group quite a bit last night, indeed. The hard part is figuring out exactly how the hammer interfaces with the bolt. With my AR-15, this was easy because I could easily tell exactly how the opened lower receiver and trigger group dealt with the bolt carrier as it cycled. With the Mini-14, it's more difficult.
