Marlin Mod 39
I have an old Marlin Model 39 in pretty good shape w/color case hardened receiver, semi pistol grip, 24" octagon barrel, and the old style tubular magazine release. The barrel does not state the usual ".22 short, long, long rifle", only the Marlin logo. It is chambered for .22 short only...anyone ever heard of one of these? Any idea what I've got? Any info would be gretly appreciated. Much obliged.

Welcome to the forum. I believe you have a model 39 lever-action repeater, made from 1922-38. Although Stoeger's Gun traders guide doesn't state that the were only chambered in short or short, lr and long. Thats my guess. I'm sure the experts will have more info. The value depending on condition can be as high as $2,000. [8D]

Sounds like it might be a Gallery Gun made for use at shooting galleries....but I didn't know Marlin made any of these in the Model 39, and none of my books mention them.
Most Gallery Guns were made in slide action and chambered for .22 short only. Marlin did make a Gallery Gun.....the Model 25 Slide Action Rifle (.22 Short), but only for a few years around 1910.0 -

They're not as friendly as the "experts" here on GB, but they know their stuff.
The Model 39 is a true classic in 22 rimfire and is, in my humble opinion, the finest repeating rifle ever built.0 -
Thanks to all for the input. It has me puzzled as well. I have Marlin gallery guns, all pumps, and a Remington auto (Browning design, all in .22 short, and have never seen any Marlin 39, 39A, Golden, or Mountie in short only. I'll check with suggested collectors association and write Marlin and the Cody museum for more info...I'll let you all know what I find out (I kinda suspect someone made this gun up from parts). Addendum...this rifle has a real nice stock and a low (225X) serial number with no prefix...my understanding is that hese were better than those with a prefix or S suffix (?) Thanks again for all your help. 0
