S&W Model 14 K38

Does anyone know if the S&W Model 14 .38SP was ever manufactured with recessed cylinder. I know it had a pinned barrel, but I was told once that recessed cylinders were only used on the magnums. I am almost certain that I have seen these advertised with recessed cylinder. Would like to know for certain. Thanks.

    My K-38, Ser.K- 184,292 does NOT have recessed cylinder. Doesn't mean that some of them didn't, but the dozen or so I've seen over the years all lacked this feature. I'm pretty sure that the early Model 19's were recessed so it wouldn't surprise me if some 14's were as well.
    Just as an aside, my K-38 is one of the most accurate revolvers I've ever encountered. A real keeper.

    Even going back to pre-model number days none of my info. indicates a recessed cylinder. Not to say there isn't one, or maybe what you saw was a 357 cylinder. Only way to determine for certain is to contact S&W Historian, Roy Jinks; 1-800-331-0852 ext. 223

    Ditto what Contender-Man says here! My 14-3 has recessed and was made sometime around 1966 therefor being something of a late model. My 585 (357) does not and was made in the very late 80's. Call Roy to be certain.

    I have several S&W 38spcl K frames and although they do have the pinned barrel they DO NOT have the recessed cylinder. They 357 K frames of the same age that I have DO have the recessed cylinder. Although the recessed cylinder may have been available in the 38 special guns I have never seen one!!!

    19's shared common cylinder material from the cut-off department with other K-frames. Cylinder OAL differed, as did chambering (including recessing ). As the recess cutter is an integral part of the chambering reamer, it would be impossible to get a recessed .38 special-length chamber from a .357 reamer. This means the existence of a countersinking .38 reamer loose somewhere in the shop, something that S&W's quality control, engineering, and general management departments would have canned a lot of people over. It would be possible to rework a 19 cylinder into a 10, 14, 15, etc, but you would still have a .357 chamber. It would also be possible to rechamber a .38 to .357, but countersinking (recessing) the shorter .38 cylinder would result in wildly excessive headspace. I believe in measuring EVERYTHING that may have been someone's interference with the known factory standard.
